A little bear carved from amber some 6,000+ years ago! 🐻❤️ A hole through the torso suggests it was worn or suspended from a cord. National Museum in Szczecin, Poland 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a small figurine of a bear carved and polished out of a piece of amber between 9600 and 4100 BC. The amber is a deep translucent orange in colour which is emphasised by the display lighting against a dark background which makes the amber glow. The bear's head is carved to show ears, mouth, nostrils and eyes. A hole runs through the bear's torso, suggesting it was threaded onto a cord. Dimensions:
Length 10.2 cm, Height 4.2cm

I took this photo today at the Landesmuseum Halle in Germany where the bear is currently on loan from Poland for the excellent Shamaness exhibition.

The figurine was discovered in Stupsk during peat mining in 1887. According to the National Museum in Szczecin "Shortly after its discovery, the figure underwent conservation work to restore its original appearance as it was covered with a layer of dull patina from the exposure to the minerals contained in the peat. Already at that time, at the end of the 19th century, it was assumed the restoration had gone too far. The figure was stripped entirely of patina, the anatomical features of the animal were emphasised, the eyes and nostrils were sharply drawn, and the amber was carefully polished".

In 2013, a competition was organised by the Education Department of the National Museum in Szczecin, for children to choose a name for the bear. The winning name was 'Stupcio', an affectionate diminutive meaning 'little guy from Stupsk'.

9,500 years old! And still intact! A Mesolithic woven baskets from Spain’s Cueva de los Murciélagos (“Cave of the Bats”) are Europe’s oldest known basketry. Thanks to the cave’s near‑zero humidity, organic materials didn’t decay, preserving several baskets for more than 9,000. 🧵/1/2 📷 me

Great Warhol show at Wolverhampton: 'Maybe the curators intend Art Star to be as double-edged as most of the works on show. If you thought you knew Andy Warhol, go to Wolverhampton and think again' Review: cmillerartlife.blogspot.com/2026/09/andy... www.wolverhamptonart.org.uk/whats-on/and...
cmillerartlife.blogspot.com
Andy Warhol Art Star (Wolverhampton Art Gallery until October 4 2026)
Andy Warhol is too famous. Everyone thinks they know his work, and him, to the point that it is very easy to simply stop looking and engaging. To this end, I nearly did not bother to go to Wolverhampton Art Gallery, to see that I thought would be an exhibition of second-string prints. This is a cautionary tale which proves that art, all art, is best viewed in person and if you ever get the chance to go and look for yourself, grab it. Artist Rooms is a wonderful initiative from Tate and National Galleries Scotland which allows regional collections to access a stock of prints and drawings and in this case they are working with a collection which is renowned for its own, mainly British, Pop Art holdings. The resulting exhibition is bigger, fresher and more enlightening than I had possibly imagined.

🎨 Monet, Boudin, Courbet, Pissarro, Auburtin & Dufy are coming to The Bowes Museum. Impressions of Light brings significant loans from MuMa together with our Pre-Impressionist collection to explore the transformation of landscape painting. 📅 Opens 26 September.
A promotional poster for The Bowes Museum exhibition “Impressions of Light: Masterpieces from MuMa - Le Havre and The Bowes Museum.” The central image is a landscape painting showing a small pink-roofed cottage nestled among green hills overlooking a bright blue sea. The sky is painted in soft shades of pink, lavender, and grey, creating a luminous coastal scene. Vertical colour blocks in blue, pink, turquoise, and green appear alongside the artwork. The poster includes The Bowes Museum and MuMa logos, with exhibition dates 26 September 2026 – 14 March 2027 displayed at the bottom.
