Small cottages on Borrowdale Old Road in Keswick, the Lake District. Before the days of motor transport and mass tourism, this narrow lane was the only road from Keswick to Borrowdale.

Twice recently I have found fly agaric fungi under silver birch trees so I asked if there is an association. The answer was ‘Fly agaric and silver birch share a mutually beneficial mycorrhizal relationship where the fungus trades soil nutrients for sugars’.

The Cursing Stone by artist Gordon Young in the underpass, Carlisle, Cumbria. The text originates from the 'Monition of Cursing', a 1,069-word curse invoked in 1525 by Gavin Dunbar, the Archbishop of Glasgow, to punish violent cross-border thieves and cattle rustlers known as the Border Reivers.

It was cloudy in Bassenthwaite, Cumbria all day and then this. "I can see the back of the front", I said. The reply, "does that make sense?".

The Vale of York Cup was found in 2007 by metal detectorists near Harrogate in North Yorkshire. It was probably buried shortly after the West Saxon king Athelstan conquered the Viking kingdom of Northumbria in AD 927. Seen in the British Museum. #FindsFriday

15th century carvings on walls in Carlisle Castle are thought to have been made by prison guards with time on their hands. There are similar carvings in other castles, like the Tower of London and Dover, but these were done later and were made by prisoners. #CastleSaturday

In Carlisle today so the obligatory photo of the Cathedral. It was founded in 1122, during the reign of King Henry I, as a community of Canons Regular. The building was refurbished in the 13th and 14th centuries, receiving impetus from the presence of the court of Edward I in 1307.
