Russian drone explodes near Polish border, military investigates incident
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has reported a powerful explosion near the Polish-Ukrainian border in Volyn region, following the fall or downing of a drone in the area. According to Tusk, the drone may have targeted a gas station before the blast.
Tusk told a government meeting on Thursday, as quoted by RMF FM, that a Russian strike drone crashed near the Dorohusk border crossing with Ukraine on September 17. He suggested that the drone was likely aimed at a filling station close to the frontier.
"I have received another report: the Russian attack on western Ukraine has ended. Very close to the Polish border, near Dorohusk, a gas station was likely targeted again. There was a powerful explosion in the area and Poland scrambled its aircraft," Tusk said, calling September 17 an "exceptional day, including in terms of today's security situation."
Jacek Goryszewski, spokesperson for Poland's Armed Forces Operational Command, stated that the drone most likely fell or was shot down about four kilometers from the Polish-Ukrainian border, on the Ukrainian side. He described the aircraft as a jet-powered drone that approached the Polish border at high speed.
Goryszewski added that Polish military personnel are reviewing surveillance records to determine the exact circumstances of the incident. "We are still checking our systems' recordings, but have early indications that the drone most likely hit its target or was shot down about four kilometers inside Ukrainian territory," he said.
On September 15, another drone was discovered off Poland’s Baltic Sea coast, which, according to initial reports, may have been a Russian Geran drone. On September 13, a Russian drone struck a truck about 800 meters from the Polish border near the Yahodyn border crossing. Also on that day, Russian forces struck the locomotive of a passenger train heading to Warsaw.
