OpenAI projected to bring in $20bn less in revenue than expected
Questions raised over AI growth as ChatGPT maker forecasts this year’s revenue at $50bn, way below the $70bn signalled before OpenAI has revealed that it is making about $20bn less in projected revenue than it had recently indicated to investors, raising questions about the break-neck growth rate in demand for AI. The ChatGPT-maker company has told investors that its revenues for this year would reach $50bn (£37bn), a projection based on sales up to the end of September. Continue reading...

It is a mark of how markets and business leaders have completely lost their minds over AI that these companies, which have haemorrhaged money, never made a profit and consistently underperformed their revenue projections, are still talked about as being worth trillions of dollars.

Here is how politics, in most cases, works: Rich and powerful interests, whether in fossil fuels, finance, big tech, media, meat, pharma or foreign governments, make a demand, and use their sophisticated tools to persuade a government to adopt it. The government adopts it. Please read whole🧵

Because the majority of the BBC's journalistic output these days boils down to uncritically reporting that 'X person says X thing' and billionaires have the means to get the things they say in front of the BBC in a way that the average person doesn't.

I have seen my neighbour run over his own child's scooter, abandoned in the middle of our small cul-de-sac, easy for all to see. Except the bonnet of his lifted pickup is five feet off the floor, so it was invisible to him, just as a dog, child, or anyone smaller than an average adult would be.

I completely agree with this. Slavishly following the rules is not as important as your overall clarity (and consistency), even at the highest levels of academia. The rules are there to help us communicate clearly - they should never become a barrier to communicating at all.

werner herzog on AI filmmaking (from here www.indiewire.com/features/int...)
Q: A couple years ago at IDFA, I saw this movie "About a Hero," which is this partly Al-generated hybrid documentary that tries to recreate the atmosphere of your films.

A: The intention of this young filmmaker was never to remake any [of my films], but making something in the spirit. And I immediately said, "You will fail. It is such a stupid idea. It's phenomenally, abysmally stupid. I will not take part in it." He wanted me to explain things and have my voice in it.
I said, "You are alone. There's such a thing as free speech, which I respect. So go ahead and fail." And it is a failure, period.
It's so standardized that Al can step in because there's not real storytelling. It's mimicry of something that has happened before. And I welcome Al to replace all the idiots who are into nothing but repeating, repeating, repeating until it's ad nauseam.
When it's ad nauseam, please, please, please let Al step in and do the job.

I don't know how that turns out, could help the Greens, could actually help the right, or could leave Labour badly weakened but still limping over the line. Either way, it's two years not doing anything about the planet being on fire, which is definitely bad.

This is the key thing that so many debates about AI replacing jobs miss. Whether AI can do your job is not relevant. What's relevant is whether your boss believes (almost certainly incorrectly) that AI can do your job, or whether your boss wants to use AI as an excuse to let you go to 'cut costs'.

Thing is, no one needs these for work. That's just an excuse. An extremely small percentage need some kind of utility vehicle, but nothing as bloated as these. Most 4x4s never go offroad. Most pickups never carry anything in the bed. Most SUVs never contain loads larger than a couple of children.
