we've never had much reason to articulate this before a.i., but a reason we enjoy literature, art, music, etc. is that we know it is one human mind trying to express something fundamentally human and otherwise inexpressible to another human mind

As a higher ed finance person, I keep emphasizing that more students are enrolling in high cost of educating fields like health and engineering and fewer in lower-cost fields like the humanities. This squeezes institutional budgets as cross-subsidies disappear.

The fixation on college majors continues to be one of the great bait and switches of modern education. Core curriculum classes, distributed across the subjects and comprising the bulk of course credits taught in any given year continue to be *most* of college education.

You are not better than academia because you have monetized our culture’s grievances with academics and intellectuals. You are using your periphery to universities to be an intellectual parasite and launder the right wing goal to dismantle higher education.

A lot of attention is paid to craft traditions in Western Europe and North America, such as handsewn Hermes leather goods and bespoke Savile Row suits. But the uneven focus leads some to believe that things made outside of these places are low quality. This is not true. 🧵

The NYT is being disingenuous here. The AMA has *always* said that gender-affirming surgeries should generally be reserved for adults. That's part of why so few kids get them! The AMA reiterated this position and the NYT is characterizing it as a policy change. It's not.

If you work in higher ed, you need to get your folks together and end the use of course evals or at least bar their consideration in evaluation, promotion, and hiring. This needed to happen yesterday because they don't measure learning, they measure instructor gender, but now it's a snitch pool.

People living under fascism didn’t survive by giving up joy—they protected it. They held onto the things fascism tried to erase: art, friendship, jokes, rituals, language, memory. Not as escapism but as resistance. As proof they were still human. Joy isn’t frivolous under fascism. It’s strategic.

REFLECTIONS ON AI IN THE CLASSROOM:
How We are Not Using Al in the Classroom
By Sonja Drimmer & Christopher J. Nygren
Premise
Prompt engineering is a term that has become commonplace since the widespread availability of generative Al applications like ChatGPT. The idea is that the outputs of the large language models (LLMs) on which these applications are based are only as good as the prompts that are input: vague prompts result in equally vague outputs. And thus was born the race to train for careers in prompt engineering. Unfortunately, the bubble seems to have burst before even the first generation of students was trained for this career outcome.
We were given a prompt as an invitation to participate in this newsletter: "How are you using Al in the classroom?" While we have accepted this invitation, we are engaging in the most humanistic act we can imagine—refusing the prompt.”

Just on a vibe level, you are likelier to convince people to vote for you if you clearly stand for something. The people who agree with you will rally around that; the people who don't know if they do will at least see that you're capable of standing for something. It's been like 20 years of this.
