At what point do we recognize rape for the hate crime & sexual terrorism that it is? Two men knocked a Democratic candidate out & one raped her while the second waited then declared she wasn't worth a gang rape.

We know this is true because men continue to admit their entitlement in studies. They'll give lip service to condemn the hypothetical rapist, especially if he belongs to a group they do not, but they reserve the right to define rape so as to exclude most rapes.

What we've seen with recent defenses of rapists is confirmation that we live in a rape culture that does not in fact think rape is all that bad & men should absolutely not face any consequences. Or lose access to their ability to rape.

It's actively insanity inducing to be a survivor and a feminist right now because in the face of the sheer ubiquity of sexual assault and the lack of consequences for it, we're all being besieged by demands that we think of the rapist men, forgive the rapist men, cleanse the souls of the rapist men

This is why more women don't come forward, and why more rapists aren't jailed. Because mostly-male cops and prosecutors find it more believable that a 20-yr-old would want to have sex with a room full of fraternity brothers than accept she was raped. What ever happened to common fucking sense?

I was totally baffled by this—I thought maybe I missed something. Because why would she go to police if she said it was all consensual? It turns out the DA was playing language games: Doe described what happened to her, and *prosecutors* made a legal determination that what happened wasn’t a crime.

Men's entitlement to extracting sex from women at any cost (to the woman), ignoring all signs of distress or pain or inability to actively participate, doesn't come from some abstract "biological" cause but a culture that reinforces sex as a woman's only function. We have not progressed past that.

But I just did what nearly all writing about the issue does: talked about the percent of women on campus who will become victims without talking about the percent of men on campus who will become perpetrators. Most campus rape victims know their assailants.
1 in 8 students experiences sexual violence during college.
The 2019 Campus Climate Survey found that 13% of undergraduate students experienced rape or sexual assault after enrolling in college.

That’s about:

• 1 in 4 undergrad women (26%)

• 1 in 14 undergrad men (7%)

who experienced nonconsensual sexual contact by physical force or inability to consent since enrolling at their school.

The real solution is collective, not individual: "Based on her study of more than 150 tribal societies, she identified what makes a society or culture “rape prone,” “rape free,” or something between the two.... in rape-free cultures, women have far more authority, status, safety, and freedom."
