Another thing about fraternities is that the hazing rituals where slightly older young men would physically, mentally emotionally and sometimes even sexually abuse slightly younger young men have always disturbed and upset me greatly. And it’s really telling that I’ve seen men defend those too

Within a decade, I suspect that millennial calls for “consent training” will look just as out of touch as boomer calls for “rape whistles.” Both interventions were equally as successful. The rate of sexual assault has not changed on college campuses since we started measuring it 60 years ago.

It’s worth pointing out that Cornell students receive consent training. Schools pivoted to primarily informal responses to sexual violence years ago. This gang rape happened because those solutions didn’t work. Survivors and their advocates have been raising an alarm about that for almost a decade.

The first requirement of restorative justice is a perpetrator’s confession. He has to admit what he has done and to take accountability. The men in this case are smearing the victim and threatening her with lawsuits. They are not candidates for RJ. They would turn it into a new site of violence.

From experience in survivor work, the default to "restorative justice" is just part of rape culture. It uses more academic and supposedly liberatory jargon in spaces where traditional patriarchal and religious excuses for abuse wouldn't get as much traction, but to the exact same ends. Nothing more.

I find it wild that as a young man no one told me shit about sexual violence and how it's perpetrated, with by abusers and institutions, until much later. It happens every time. They bring up the extremely rare cases (usually they just bring up the Rolling Stone one) where allegations were fabricated to say we should doubt this victim. They try to poke holes in her story. They try to redefine and restrict the meaning of rape.
