Given that there is not likely to be a national, bipartisan demand for accountability in the wake of Trump — the major distinction with Nixon — any accountability, civil or criminal, will be a partisan and political project that I think should be pursued as vigorously as possible.

There's been a growing refrain of "why should we bother learning X if a machine can do it faster" in recent years. And my answer is the same reason we learn to write our own compilers in computer science education. We will always need to educate ourselves in the how and why and the humanity of tech.

Staples Rezoning: Results
STATEMENT FROM COUNCIL MEMBER
KAYLA SANTOSUOSSO
For the last several months I have been in negotiations with the developers for the Staples property. While this is likely one of the last rezoning votes I can make in Bay Ridge, negotiations were still heavily shaped by the charter changes that take effect in January.
The developers made clear that if the Council did not approve a modified project, they would take advantage of the new rules to resubmit at their original building - or an even bigger, denser building - for expedited approval and with no wins for our community.Staples Rezoning: Results

what if the real trick to doing political economy right is to use the organizational forms that work best for the specific problem and context you're trying to solve in any given situation, rather than picking one grand unifying theory to rule them all and making everything conform to it

note that "everyone picks the best organizational form for the purpose" will also at least sometimes include equity financed corporations with traditional conceptions of private property rights, unless you coercively prevent that specifically. sometimes corporations are really good at their job.

On 9 September, the Michigan supreme court ruled that the state's sex offender registration act (Sora) cannot be applied retroactively to cases involving offenses committed before the law's relevant date. Michigan's state police, as a result, removed more than 20,000 people whose offenses occurred before 1 July 2011 from the agency's online sex offender database.

When I taught at an all-boys prep school, we'd do an activity where I had them list every sexual term they could think of. They'd often laugh, as many were absurd things meant for Urban Dictionary. We'd then go through how many terms were violent (~85%) and how many were male-dominant (~90%).

The Pope reminds me of a version of Catholicism I knew growing up as a young man attending anti-war and anti-death penalty protests, where I met elderly Catholics who shared their version of faith with me. I learned that Catholicism was about love and mercy for the weak, the condemned, and the poor.

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.
