I think Greg is correct, but Americans need to be aware that Magyar’s Tisza government is aggressively going after every Fidesz official, removing them, using every lever of the state to yank them out of power. This is far more aggressive and rapid than anything proposed in the US so far.

The Magyar government understands if they let up then Fidesz and Orban will regroup like the Brasilian Far Right did and can come right back in. So they have to move with intense endless purpose to cut out the cancer of Orban. Because five years is not much time to reverse it all & clock’s ticking.

The US Democrats need to look at their next Presidency as an endless sprint to obliterate MAGA, every day for years. Until the cancer is gone then there should be no time wasted on MAGA tears or conciliation. Only endless justice and rebuilding the democracy. Govern like every day is the last day.

For a very clear comparison, emulating Magyar would be removing all the MAGA justices and judges from Federal Courts in the first 100 days. That is the scale of democratic chemotherapy we are discussing.

Among my favorite books are Ender's Game and the Ender's Shadow series by Orson Scott Card. But because of his homophobia, notably his financial support of that cause, I haven't purchased a book by him in fifteen years. The books I read of his are still good though. Please don't buy them.

The last few weeks I have run across Pro Palestine protestors vilifying Brad Landers for not being sufficiently pro Palestine and now the ADL vilifying Mamdani's antisemitism strategy. But its the way Zionists responded to Brad Landers and Pro Palestine movement to Mamdani that I want to comment on

Fundamentally Jews being safe in NYC has *nothing inherently to do* with Palestine. Israel's genocide of Palestinians is a contributing factor to the rise in antisemitism, but that could end and there would still be antisemitic violence and harassment. Gotta disentangle them.

And yeah, sometimes Jewish communal establishment organizations say "oh well if you really cared you'd stop criticizing Israel," they are wrong and you can tell them to fuck off. Doesn't lift the responsibility to actually protect Jews. People deserve safety even if their leaders are racist morons.

There is exactly one large, well funded organization in NYC that makes me feel unsafe specifically as a Jewish person, and it’s the ADL
•@NYCMayor Mamdani's antisemitism strategy finally landed and only confirms what we already knew: this mayor does not treat the hate facing Jewish New Yorkers as an emergency and refuses to acknowledge the different shapes it takes. Since he took office 271 days ago, ADL has recorded hundreds of antisemitic incidents in NYC, nearly 40% of which were related to Israel.
After throwing out the IHRA definition on his first day in office, nine months later, his signature strategy still refuses to replace it with any working definition of antisemitism. He has looked the other way as flags glorifying terror groups have been flown outside synagogues, a deliberate act meant to intimidate families walking in to pray, and as crowds gathered outside houses of worship voicing support for the same groups. At the same time, he continues prioritizing his anti-Israel agenda over the basic promises he made to Jewish New Yorkers.

Significant numbers of leftists think Mayor Mamdani has betrayed the left by putting out an anti-antisemitism plan at all, and groups that claim to fight antisemitism like the ADL are giving Mamdani zero credit because he has not suddenly endorsed Zionism, and I am caught between and I am tired.

I blacked out the name as I don't want to put the individual on blast, but I have some commentary on this rationale: their argument is basically the same as "Stalin/Hitler united their countries and made them strong/do you know how bad it was pre Stalin/Hitler?"
Referring to Mao Zedong, posts in order.
(China) Could have done better with a better domestic leader, but I think failing to understand how much life absolutely sucked before him will prevent you from understanding the somewhat complicated attitude a lot of even quite educated and well informed Chinese people have towards him.

personally while I don't dispute that Mao had a lot of horrible policy (both in terms of human rights and basic competency, I think "Mao bad" is a thought terminating cliche that doesn't address how he was an instrumental figure in turning around the fortunes of Chinese people

Ofc I admit to being biased as my grandparents were born into crushing rural poverty and saw their own fortunes as well as those of the people around them turn around with the party, even though they had their own ups and downs with the party themselves.

May this is less "Mao not bad" and more "I need peole to understand just how bad the before-Mao times were" + the fact that he was instrumental in putting China on the path to not being a poverty stricken war-torn hellhole, and that's not something every country has managed to get out of
