Dem leaders act as if the biggest problem of having a supreme court full of rapists and absurdly corrupt facebook grandpas, is that it erodes the dignity and and gravitas of the court. Everyone *else* is worried about the court acting like a room full of omnipotent rapists and boomer conspiracists.

If you actually want to understand this perspective, which is more affective & functional than disaffected & precise, you have to consider the directional valence of the act of adding nuance Technically, it's true that Biden couldn't JUST make a phone call and surely didn't WANT the genocide...

I've thought a lot in my biostats program about how to use statistical relationships and distribution structures pedagogically to more fully recognize the messiness of interdependence that pervades the sensation of cultural unities without reducing it to numeric trendcasting. Excited to read!

I think about this essay all the time
It has also occluded something deeper. The philosopher Mark Wilson has observed that concepts often appear stable while the work they do shifts entirely as they move between domains. He calls this "wandering significance." "Decision" is wandering now. In the military context it means the system's output, a targeting nomination scored and forwarded. In journalism and tech criticism it means much the same, the thing the AI got wrong. In neither of these does it mean what it used to mean, which is a person choosing to do something for which they could be held accountable. People are still making decisions in that sense. Someone decided to compress the kill chain. Someone decided that deliberation was latency. Someone decided to build a system that produces a thousand targeting decisions per hour and call them high-quality. Someone decided to start this war. Several hundred people are sitting on Capitol Hill, refusing to stop it. Calling it an "AI problem" gives those decisions, and those people, a place to hide.

it's funny but also a reminder that the fundamental premise here is that a Black man can't be objective when talking about race while a white man can because Black people do identity politics and white people do facts and this my friends is what I have named "white empiricism"

Truly unthinkable in 2026 to act like hypothetical AI "opportunities" can be divorced from the real AI applications accelerating environmental destruction and socio-ecological alienation via capital & power accumulation. Gore is coping with total ideological defeat by conceding Green Growth Theory.

Which do we think has more human autonomy: an AI with infinite resources made to gather intel by any means necessary, oh btw here's a training set with a bunch of hacking methods to get it, Or Will, who is so negatively polarized that any evidence against his claim triggers automatic dismissal?

Maximally, we should treat sex at birth like private medical data. Not necessary for legal documentation, not necessary for sports. We can stratify by more relevant traits. Gendered violence should be addressed by stopping the violence, not by reinforcing the social hierarchy that genders it!

"any number of groups can shake down the coalition like that" but the point of a coalition is we all agree to support each other So what are we agreeing to if Dems aren't agreeing to stand up for anyone in their coalition?

Classic example of why journalists should avoid the passive voice. WHO barred them? What authority if any did that person have to issue such an order? If no real authority, it was just a request backed with an implication of revenge against any who didn't go along. That's not being "barred"...

"protect trans kids," yes, and from whom? rules like "children may not socially transition" are not just about making a child feel the withering contempt of authority figures, but also about declaring trans children valid targets for social pressure or just corrective beatings from their peers

The entire idea that sports are somehow about equal opportunity is brand new and made up. Sports has always been about finding exceptional bodies, exceptional talents, and elevating them for the rest of us to see what they can do. Suddenly we're pretending it's not like this to harm trans people.

2h.

I got fired from AMC because whenever
someone ordered a small popcorn, I'd
"accidentally" fill up a large bucket and tell
them we ran out of smalls.

Now I work at McDonald's, and you better
believe you order a 6 piece, you're getting
8 or 9 nuggets. Order a 10 piece? There are
at least 13 in that box.

l'll keep doing this sh*t until the day I die.
F_ck these giant corporations. I'm here for

it's two things, to me: 1) trans rights matter because trans people matter and deserve rights, not just because failing to stand for trans rights is a bellwether for inauthentic progressivism more broadly 2) if you can't be trusted on trans rights you can't be trusted on anything

it doesn't even work too. it never fucking does. it's just conflict avoidance for the sake of conflict avoidance. the conflict *does not actually go away*, but people aren't comfortable with the idea of *actually fighting it* so t hey instead just beg various groups to somehow go invisible.

Carbon accounting policies favor geological storage simply because it is easier to measure. This bureaucratic caution ignores physical reality. By managing our building stock as a rolling carbon pool, we can turn our cities into permanent secondary forests and fields.

Attachment is a root cause of suffering, but it is also a skill for overcoming suffering to generate meaning through tradition. Their attachment is what makes it special, and the adaptations they've taken on to fulfill their commitments make them special. Much to think about!

If we're gonna get into the essence of slurs we gotta muddy the waters: any word can be a slur if it's used with hatred in one's heart, but it doesn't have to be the user's heart. Meaning is contextual, and we can read slurriness into a word spoken innocently because of the hatred in its history

Reporters only have "access" to Vance if they're already sympathetic to his worldview: democracy is annoying, bad voters should be suppressed, elections already unfairly favor liberals; there's no story there, at least not one they care to tell. Better to target smug liberals caught in "hypocrisy"
