I watched this spool up into a movement in the last 48 hours, and it's not just kids. I'm in my mid 40s, and women older than me are claiming this title and telling their stories. For the record, I too, am Jane Doe.

This was a formative show of my early adolescence - my younger sib was obsessed with it, so we watched it endlessly. Mr. Belding was hopelessly unhip, kind, and generous, and Haskins showed us what a supportive adult looks like. What a lesson for our young selves.

Today's Word: Marcescence. When a tree, usually an oak tree, keeps its dead brown leaves through winter instead of shedding them in fall like everyone else. From Latin marcescere, to wither. In PA we see white oaks, pin oaks, and shingle oaks do this. The mighty trees of fall.

Calling in sick today, because I haven't lived in New York for 6 years and the Anniversary has been a quiet thing I noted for many years now, but this year it's hitting me raw and angry. I'm tired and emotional and sad and nobody wants me in the office like this.

Gloria Steinem taught America that sexism is a symptom of a system that can be changed.

From the fight for equal pay to abortion access and political representation, she showed that progress comes when people organize, build power and refuse to accept inequality as inevitable.

She staged protests, established domestic violence shelters, created a magazine owned and operated entirely by women and helped build a movement that fundamentally changed this country.

Her legacy is the millions of people she inspired to believe that a more just world was possible.

She lived in New York for 70 years. We were lucky to have her. We mourn her loss and will carry her work forward.

When Amadeus first transferred from London to Broadway in 1980 the Broadway production starred Tim Curry as Mozart and Ian McKellen as Salieri and I would like to go back in time and watch that.

One of the more obscure facts I remember about Dolly Parton is this: just like Star Trek would not exist without Lucille Ball, Buffy would not exist without Dolly Parton. She was a silent producer of the movie and show. That's why Buffy Summers has the same birthday as Dolly: January 19.

She took a side in culture wars. It might feel like she didn’t bc she was proudly a hillbilly country singer from evangelical family, her comments were affirmative rather than critical (eg “yay trans people” rather than “boo transphobes”), and she commented less on electoral politics.

Dolly Parton knew what it was like to struggle as she fought for working families her whole career. From providing free books to kids to giving working women our "9 to 5" anthem, she was an icon and an inspiration. Rest in power to our union sister. We will always love you.

So. A thing I did not do before I moved to Canada was order a driving license transcript. (I rarely drive. It just never occurred to me.) When I transferred my license to Ontario they collected my license to submit back to NY, and told me they would notify NY to deregister me and destroy it.
