Always funny when ostensible liberals are like "You see, this postcolonial conflict is actually very nuanced and complex, because what makes it so very unique is that the majority ethnic group doesn't want to share power with the minority ethnic groups." Oh wow, I didn't know that, that's wild man.

Thiel's reputation for contrarianism is well founded. Forever the chess player, he revels in trying to outthink the competition, in devising the unexpected move—the seemingly absurd but devastating maneuver that no one sees coming. "Most people think that if something's written, if it's shared by the majority of people, then you'll look like a black sheep for challenging it," says his friend Gary Kasparov, the Russian chess grandmaster. "Peter doesn't have any problem with that." A devoted J.R.R. Tolkien fan from an early age, Thiel is equally enamored with Kirill Eskov's The Last Ringbearer, a retelling of The Lord of the Rings in which Sauron is a beleaguered victim and the elves are bellicosely bent on world domination. "Gandalf's the crazy person who wants to start a war," Thiel explains, "and Mordor is this technological civilization based on reason and science. Outside of Mordor, it's all sort of mystical and environmental and nothing works. Anyway, it's really clever." He's

I've worked in police oversight for five years in a large city. Body cameras protect law enforcement from false accusations more often than they protect residents from brutality. Cops knows this. An officer not wearing a camera during a violent incident should be presumed to have committed a crime.

Yeah, this is a really important question.
I've been associating with rationalists for almost a decade. Their ideas were compelling and you can't deny their foresight. The founders of every superintelligence effort are all bound up in the rationality sphere. Sam Altman and Greg Brockman used to frequent the MIRI offices.
The way I relate to rationalists is it's like the bizarre hypertrophied physiques on specialized athletes. In my opinion they have weirdly specialized minds that make them uniquely able to be correct about topics removed from daily experience. These "specialized minds" also can make them off-putting to many people.
I dont know if I'd consider myself a rationalist. I am intuitively opposed to polyamory, veganism, and consequentialist intuitions. But I certainly trust them to be correct about factual questions.

Greg and I met at a MIRI party before OpenAl, and he would sometimes invite me to parties. Sam asked to talk with me before founding OpenAl. They didn't frequent the offices, but I could see how that rumor would start downstream of sloppy anecdotes I've told.
