Today I was discussing Executive Dysfunction with some folks, and how in our household we call it "The Sits" I decided to make an info poster. It's based on my personal experience with it. Yes, the person is me 😆 #neurodivergent #memes #executivedysfunction

Hyperfocusing on one specific thing but not THE thing
Daydreaming or "spacing out"
Internally screaming at yourself to just DO the THING to no avail
Time blindness; where did the last 3 hours go?
Feeling overwhelmed by tasks which would take 5 minutes if you just got up and DID them, but instead take all day because of THE SITS

Oh, I’ve found a solution for this! To be able to do one task, you must find another task (preferably several) that you want to do even less than the first task. I used to be SO productive back when I had to do annual tax returns!

This irks me because I'm good at self-reflection, but when I look for what emotion is stopping me from working on a beloved hobby, there's just... void. A lead I've found is called Pathological Demand Avoidance, but most of the advice is "don't berate fussy kids", not much for helping yourself.

That's a good name. I also have the sits through my entire life. I usually explain to my friends that it feels like an engine you are trying to start but you lack the key.

Oh, I wish I’d had this and this language for my post-stroke grandmother a decade ago. The Sits is the exact manifestation of her post-stroke executive dysfunction. She didn’t have enough short term memory left to retain the concept of executive function, but I bet we could have managed The Sits.
