are there any US fans pretending this is legit, kinda feels like the two lanes I'm seeing are "I am bummed that my team is benefiting from this corruption" and "I like that my team is benefiting from this corruption"

Art Martin@gartmartin9.bsky.social

U.S. fans trying to pretend this is legit, keep invoking s. 27 of FIFA's general rules. But it created rules SPECIFICALLY for WC 2026. Article 10.5 says red card means you miss subsequent match. (are US fans lobbying for Jarrell Quansah to play against Norway?) digitalhub.fifa.com/m/636f5c9c6f...

I think this is right. Also, it was a shitty and corrupt call that looked shitty and corrupt on real time. Lots of smug Europeans thought it served the US right. So this bad all around. Also, welcome to sports….

I think the way it was overturned is terrible but also the card was issued illegitimately. Can’t use slow mo review to change severity, only identify point of contact

It’s absolutely not legit, but nothing about FIFA is legit. They wanted Americans to be savvier about the ways of the beautiful game, and well…

Every known logical fallacy and cope methodology is being deployed on this one it’s funny/pathetic

Yes Rodger. So many people are arguing this was the correct outcome

I feel a bit alone in my crankitude in that I think the red card itself was really egregious and so the blatant cheating to make something happen that should’ve been able to happen in a legit way is not not bad, but not a Balogun Crisis™️

Bonesito @bonesito.bsky.social · 06/07/2026

Not “legit” but it seems like it was probably standard pressure from a potential Court of Arbitration for Sport filing and guys like Ken Griffin that led to a review finding VAR was used improperly and once it was mostly resolved the big wet orange guy made a pointless call to snatch credit.

In an offshoot of lane 1 where I’m happy my team benefits from it because we already knew these people are all massive shitheads and I’m hoping (but not holding breath) that said shitheads face consequences of some kind. Balogun gets to play, and hold the people I already hates feet to the fire 👍.

not only do I think it’s not legit, I might be rooting for Belgium as a result

Ryan Patrick Dolan @stockyardsports.bsky.social · 06/07/2026

I literally don’t give a shit, because 1) FIFA is corrupt garbage and the countries don’t hold them accountable, and 2) it was a horrible call assessed by VAR in a way it’s not supposed to be used 3) they’re should be an appeal process for suspensions like there is other major professional sports

Finally, Trump's corruption is for something good

Link Hogthrob @linkhogthrob.bsky.social · 06/07/2026

What if Poch self regulates and sits Balogun? Or at least keeps him until needed. I mean they'd already been putting in a game plan presumably with different personnel.

I'd feel differently if the overwhelming majority of responses to the red card itself hadn't been, "This isn't right, and it's bad that the US can't appeal." Justice has been done! The card was bad! Pretty much everyone agreed he should get to play! It's just sports, no one's going to die!

Kyle Hagerty @clutchkyle.bsky.social · 06/07/2026

I don’t agree with that rule, but on the books, it’s basically a We Can Do What We Want clause. Shouldn’t be in the rules, but it is. Be mad at FIFA for writing the rule. USMNT did nothing wrong. Trump doesn’t play for the team.

fifa is a cartoonishly corrupt organization and we have a cartoonishly corrupt president. it’s nice to have said corruption actually benefit the american people for once!

Art Martin @gartmartin9.bsky.social · 06/07/2026

there are people on here (who I respect)--who keep invoking s. 27 and saying, hey, "I didn't write the rules". but let's pretend this was legit. If you're an adjudicator, then the governing document is the WC2026 rules not s.27 Thomas Tuchel's comments are worth a read www.bbc.com/sport/footba...

World Cup 2026 red card: Uefa claim 'integrity of the game is at stake' over Fifa's Folarin Balogun decision

Uefa says Fifa's decision not to uphold Folarin Balogun's immediate ban at the World Cup is "unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable".

Stephen Nuñez@socio-steve.bsky.social

FIFA is corrupt; Trump is corrupt; the Balogun call was bullshit; the suspension of the call was bullshit; the appeal of the suspension is bullshit. Wow this is like the perfect storm for a discourse. You have all sorts of possible stances to take. Have fun everyone.

This kind of thing does happen legitimately during seasons, so FIFA and the US could have hidden behind that fig leaf, but as usual our stupid president comes along and says "yeah I did the corrupt thing! What about it?"

trypectopah @trypectopah.bsky.social · 06/07/2026

I’m sure it’s somewhere in the bylaws that a FIFA Peace Prize recipient also gets a “The Purge” immunity card to play against any red card so this does seem legit

Who cares. A striker more doesn't makes them a better team than Belgium. And for sure not a better team than those that in theory come after.

Steven_Kovacs @stevenkovacs.bsky.social · 06/07/2026

Lots of corruption on all sides. As someone born in the US I’ve seen countless times how the joys of patriotism allow us to ignore bad things so we don’t have to mentally deal with what lead to the favorable outcome. US fans should do what makes them happy, tho, I’m team Belgium all night long!
