The media has spent so long both-sidesing that if you describe the Republicans' stated goals and policies in strictly factual terms you sound like you're running a smear campaign.

A lot of online media criticism is in the vein of "I want the media to shout louder, catastrophize harder" - demanding headlines that match a particular emotional tenor. Which I totally get! But the thing that's really missing is... just neutrally describing the actual facts of existing politics?

And on the converse, it's amazing to me that issues that are coded as very left by the media (legal pot, abortion access, even minimum wage), when you run an initiative campaign about them in particular, focusing down onto the issue, they are usually pretty broadly popular!

That's happened. Trying to find the articles from a few years ago where focus groups were presented with party platforms and the response to (Ryan-era?) Republican ambitions - cutting social services especially - was basically "Nah, that's nuts, they'd never want to do that. You're making it up."

Even the way they are writing up Haley endorsing that IVF Alabama Supreme Court decision is written in such a way to intentionally obscure the actual legal consequences, for some reason!
