Anyone who describes either my conversations or especially my sexual activity (as someone middle-aged in what amounts to a two-decade-old marriage) in these terms will need to have their own conversations with a doctor soon after the next time we meet. Ouch.

Silicon Valley has a deeply weird cognitive distortion. Ever since the death of Steve Jobs, nobody there seems to understand a fundamental fact about human nature: People like nice things. Not only do people like nice things, they will pay a premium for things that are recognizably nice.

I have no idea if the linked article is the reality-based journalism it is portrayed as being or a Haruki Murakami-esque short story. I do know that it does not make me feel good about modern life or the future.

We had a legit first-gen Macintosh, the 128K version, that Dad bought from someone at his machine tool company for what still feels like a disturbingly high number of 1985-1986 dollars. It was used for many school papers and Flight Simulator sessions until the board died in mid-1991.

Maybe the world is nudging me towards being a conspiracy freak, but: We sure this was done "accidentally"? Thinking about the suspected (some maybe proven?) Russian-linked sabotage incidents, especially around transit infrastructure, in western Europe lately. This is a pretty serious "accident".

Interesting question. Twenty-year-old me would probably be more than a bit surprised at how this is going, but not in a bad way. On the other hand, I'd have to explain that there's next to no good bands anymore and that I totally missed picking up any of too many cool cars before prices went nuts.

CEO of MicrosoftAI on anthropomorphization: “AIs are not conscious. They do not feel, experience, or suffer. They do not have innate preferences or underlying motivations. They are sequence completion engines, internally hollow, designed to follow instructions, and accomplish goals set by humans.“

Today's song is "3 O'Clock Blues" by BB King, his first breakout single recorded in 1950. King had recorded sides with Sam Phillips. But they didn't break out. This one, recorded in a makeshift studio in a Memphis YMCA set up by Joe Bihari, did. Ike Turner on Piano. youtu.be/nPeTtg3fTB8?...

What archaeology reveals about the rise of all-powerful rulers
Autocracy wasn’t inevitable in early civilizations — many were more egalitarian. But when riches were there to monopolize, strongmen and inequalities emerged.
