omg i feel the opposite, i love a chonky book!! and i still haven’t had a real success with rounding a spine and i think it’s bc my text blocks are too thin 💔 i tend toward smaller type and margins but maybe i gotta up them. i’m also not trimming by hand tho. how do you trim your text blocks?

the fun thing about doing this when the special interest in question is printing and bookmaking and Cool Old Books is that sometimes the book you check out about bookmaking is, in itself, a Cool Old Book

A book, In Quest of the Perfect Book by William Dana Orcut, on a person’s lap. It has a brown cover with a gold foil design. The design is very symmetrical, with parallel lines which form geometric, interlocking shapes, and also arc around the title and author name. The lines also encircle two small medallion motifs which look like Celtic knots, and there is a bit of scrollwork at the top which has more of an organic look but is still left-right symmetrical.

The book, opened to the title page. On the left is a full-color reproduction of a medieval manuscript page with an illuminated illustration. On the right is the title page, which reads “In Quest of the Perfect Book. Reminiscences & Reflections of a Bookman. William Dana Orcutt. Published MCMXXVI. Boston. Little, Brown & Company. There is an ex libris in the center of the page. However, the title page is obscured by a thin piece of translucent vellum bound into the book, on which is printed in smaller red type a caption for the left-hand image: “Queen Mary’s Psalter, English, 14th Century. The Last Judgment. (Brit. Mid. Royal MS. 2B vii, 11x7 inches)”

The book open to the first page of the first chapter. It is set in a serif type face, fairly large by today’s standards, maybe 18pt? There are sizable margins on the top, bottom, and outer edge of the page.

The text reads:

"HERE is a fine volume," a friend remarked, handing me a copy of The Ideal Book, written and printed by Cobden-Sanderson at the Doves Press.
"It is," I assented readily, turning the leaves, and enjoying the composite beauty of the careful typography, and the perfect impression upon the soft, handmade paper with the satisfation one always feels when face to face with a work of art. "Have you read it?”
"Why-no," he answered. "I picked it up in London, and they told me it was a rare volume. You don't necessarily read rare books, do you?”
My friend is a cultivated man, and his attitude toward his latest acquisition irritated me; yet after thirty years of similar disappointments I should not have been surprised. How few, even among those interested in books, recognize the fine, artistic touches that constitute the difference between the commonplace and the distinguished! As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing

a guy just can’t get really obsessed with early printing, buy a bunch of old books, trace enlarged versions of the type over and over to learn the design principles, draw his own typeface, get a pal to reproduce it as lead type, and open a fine press together these days
