Happy Tuesday... ; ) Winged sheep sculpture Dalby forest #Yorkshire
The winged sheep sculpture on the Crosscliff Trail in Dalby Forest. A large, weathered brown sandstone monolith features two carved recesses. The upper, larger niche is framed by classical columns and houses a 3D sculpture of a winged ram standing within an arched alcove. Below it, a horizontal rectangular relief carving depicts four sheep lined up together. The monolith is set outdoors against a backdrop of grassy terrain, low bushes, and a cloudy sky

Its such a stupid capitalist/colonialist mindset that we are somehow above the natural order and the earth which sits below our feet. It shouldn't be a constant uphill battle uprooting nature and stamping out every visage of life. We should work with nature in our construction and cities.

#FindsFriday This is a gold bulla, an amulet given to Roman boys on eight or nine days after they were born. It was found in Herculaneum, an affluent #Roman town that was destroyed, and subsequently preserved by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. ✨ Gold bulla, c. 1–79 CE. See. alt.
Bullae would be worn around the neck and their purpose was to protect the wearer from evil spirits and to proclaim them as freeborn citizens.

This particular bulla is exceptional because it is made of gold, which marked its owner out as a member of the Roman elite: leather, cloth, lead and ceramic were used by the less wealthy.

A depiction of The Odyssey in ancient art a day until the release of Christopher Nolan’s film #theodyssey 🏺 Odysseus and his crew escaped from the cyclops Polyphemos by hiding in the underside of his flock Attic black-figure column krater, c.525-500BCE Getty 96.AE.303 www.getty.edu/art/collecti...
From Getty webpage:

In the Greek epic poem the Odyssey, the hero Odysseus devised a clever ruse to escape from the man-eating, one-eyed giant Cyclops. First, Odysseus blinded the monster, then tied himself and his men to the undersides of the sheep in the giant's flock. The blinded Cyclops checked his sheep as he let them out to graze, but he only felt along their backs, so Odysseus and his men were able to escape. This Athenian black-figure column-krater depicts Odysseus bound under the ram, the leader of the flock. The scene is placed between a pair of eyes, which appear sporadically on Athenian vases of the 500s B.C. The escape from the Cyclops was the most popular scene from the Odyssey depicted on Athenian vases. The back of the vase shows either Nike or Iris between scenes of lions attacking bulls.
The Greeks produced a very strong wine, which they drank mixed with water. A krater was used as a mixing vessel to blend the wine and water before serving. The type of krater that scholars call a column-krater takes its name from the columnar appearance of the handle supports.

Wind god, Izapa culture, Soconusco region, Chiapas, 200BCE-200 CE. It personifies the Wind God (a direct antecedent of later wind deities such as the Mayan god Ik' or Ehécatl of central Mexico). The mouth shows the ritual action of blowing the breath of life and the wind that brings the rain clouds.

This colorful #Assyrian terracotta lion had a specific function: it's a rhyton, of a kind probably used for libations. The oil or wine was poured into the spout on his back, and was poured out via its pierced nostrils (!). He's a gorgeous boy, and I want one. #polychromy 🏺 1/ 1900-1800 BCE 📸 me
This highly stylized, lion-shaped terracotta vessel has a tall spout on its back and pierced nostrils for pouring; it's decorated with painted red and orange stripes, almost in a basket-weave pattern. Its mouth is open, and upper and lower fangs touch.
