Today we observe Porajmos (Roma Holocaust) Remembrance Day. on the night of 2–3 August 1944, 2,897 Roma were murdered at the Zigeunerfamilienlager at Auschwitz-Birkenau. We remember them and the half a million Sinti and Roma murdered by Nazi Germany and fascist collaborators. Na Bistaren.

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

Again, as with monetizing the presidency in plain sight, this stuff is the most elemental Are We A Federal Union Or Not? thing that should immediately end a presidency. Reverse nullification. A constitutional order that cannot punish this is not worth saving. We need massive institutional reforms.

A new rule is going into effect that will make it effectively impossible for any international student to get a PhD in almost any subject in the US. Not only is the xenophobia appalling, this is right up there with the stupidest things the dying empire has done to itself.

For context, I'm in grad school studying the effect of aerosols in the climate system, motivated by the belief (as you observe) that we are likely to use this tech in the next 20-30 years. Whether that's good thing or a bad thing will hinge on our ability to model the effects of these interventions

Zach Glaser @ziglaser.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
This makes sense for models as "prediction"--any geoengineering implementation is such a paradigm shift it doesn't make sense to treat them as a "forecast" without knowing when they will happen That said, there are ways people are trying to standardize research on the effects of geoengineering

They're not included in the "canonical" scenarios that topline climate reports like the IPCC use. Those capture a spread of different emissions trajectories within the same climate models, using different assumptions to capture uncertainty over carbon policy, clean energy, carbon capture tech, etc

It is weird that there is still a substantial set of people who believe "AI is mostly hype" at this stage: Five Eyes is warning about AI, exponential revenue & token use at the AI labs, unit distance/Erdos proofs, and so on... There are many real issues with AI, not being real is not one of them.

I've been in so many rooms with lefties who fly 10 times a year complaining about the masses' "consumerist mindset" and like, if we can't get the most progressive people on the planet to voluntarily cut their carbon footprints the size of a small island nation, how will "ban all fossil fuels" fly??

Zach Glaser @ziglaser.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
I agree AND imo if you're calling for massive gov't regulation of emissions while not trying to meaningfully cut your own it's hypocritical. And conversely practicing what you preach is a reasonable way to advance climate causes, or at least nurture awareness.

I also don't mind when people deal drugs or ask me for drugs, it's just color in my day, but I understand why some (i.e. non-young men w no kids) feel unsafe, and fear for our transit system if the approach is "increase tolerance for drug dealing" and not "stop people dealing drugs on the lightrail"

Hannah Arendt did not get everything right - her writings on segregation in the US are embarrassing, and she could be chauvinistic toward German Jews - but she got almost all of the future direction of political Zionism correct from the perspective of 1948.
Arendt: "There is very little doubt about the final outcome of an all-out war between Arabs and Jews. One can win many battles without winning a war. And up to now, no real battle has yet taken place in Palestine.

And even if the Jews were to win the war, its end would find the unique possibilities and the unique achievements of Zionism in Palestine destroyed. The land that would come into being would be something quite other than the dream of world Jewry, Zionist and non-Zionist. The “victorious” Jews would live surrounded by an entirely hostile Arab population, secluded inside ever-threatened borders, absorbed with physical self-defense to a degree that would submerge all other interests and activities. The growth of a Jewish culture would cease to be the concern of the whole people; social experiments would have to be discarded as impractical luxuries; political thought would center around military strategy; economic development would be determined exclusively by the needs of war. And all this would be the fate of a nation that—no matter how many immigrants it could still absorb and how far it extended its boundaries (the whole of Palestine and Transjordan is the insane Revisionist demand)—would still remain a very small people greatly outnumbered by hostile neighbors.

Under such circumstances (as Ernst Simon has pointed out) the Palestinian Jews would degenerate into one of those small warrior tribes about whose possibilities and importance history has amply informed us since the days of Sparta. Their relations with world Jewry would become problematical, since their defense interests might clash at any moment with those of other countries where large numbers of Jews lived. Palestine Jewry would eventually separate itself from the larger body of world Jewry and in its isolation develop into an entirely new people. Thus it becomes plain that at this moment and under present circumstances a Jewish state can only be erected at the price of the Jewish homeland."
