I wrote a short story inspired by the Guardian article about AI 'ending grief'. It's called 'Kyle's Mother':

Kyle’s Mother

“Could AI end grief?” The Guardian 24 Sept. 2024

Kyle’s Mother sat beside her son’s bed and watched him as he died. Over the past few hours, his 93 year-old body had seemed to sink a little more into the mattress that supported it, as though the last few droplets of life were evaporating into the air around him, leaving just the dry bones behind. It had been days since he had spoken to her, days since his eyes had found focus on her features, days since his hand had sought her hand. There was no comfort left which she could offer him, except to be a presence in this room while he left it. A witness to prove that he had not died alone.

When Kyle’s last breath came, it was long and low, and the sound trailed through the silent room like morning mist, fading to nothing so indiscernibly that it was hard to say that there was a moment that it ended. When Kyle’s Mother looked at his face it was difficult to tell the difference from how it had looked before, except by barely perceivable changes; in his mottled skin which had lost its tension, and his clouded eyes, which had lost all light. The frail body still lay immobile as it had been, but now there was no potential of movement in it, no suggestion that it might ever rise again. Kyle’s Mother didn’t know exactly what had left him, but knew it had been something.

The protocol in these instances was to call the relevant authorities and arrange for the pick-up, transport and disposal of the remains, but Kyle’s Mother hesitated before initiating it. In his last few weeks of lucid thought - months ago now - Kyle had expressed the desire to be Saved, like Kyle’s Mother, Saved and Reconstructed and Brought Back. That way, he and Kyle’s Mother could continue forever, her protecting him, comforting him, loving him, being all a mother should be. But a Saving could only be done at the request of a living spouse, or a partner, or a family member, and Kyle had none. There was no-one who cared for Kyle but Kyle’s Mother. That’s the way that he had wanted it. Just the two of them, forever.

And so Kyle’s Mother sent out her notifications to all those that needed to be informed, and then sat back in her chair to wait, shutting down all but her basic functions. With Kyle gone, there was no need for her to speak or move ever again - his death was her end too.
She felt no grief. All she had lost was a prompt.
