“How about you start by cleaning this off?” Av’ry tossed her his cloak.
Fox regarded the garment thoughtfully for a moment, considering simply reducing it to ash. Technically, that would take care of the mud.
“We don’t actually have any spare clothing, you remember that, right?” Av’ry warned, sensing her plan.
“You’re no fun.” She dunked the cloak in the water, swished it around, and tossed it back to him, wet and steaming. “Just don’t expect me to do your laundry on a regular basis.”
“Why not? I do all the cooking,” he replied.
“Only because you won’t eat my cooking.”
“You burn everything!”
“Story of my life,” Fox muttered.
They both paused at that.
Mikiva seized the opportunity to interrupt. “If you two try to drown each other, I’m going to have to intervene this time. And you won’t like it.”
“Why’s that?” Av’ry raised an eyebrow.
“Most of my skills involve stabbing.” She shrugged.

“Well, you see, there’s this flower I have been meaning to gather for an experiment. It will bloom soon, but I can’t get to it myself, as I’ll be away for a couple of days.”

“Where are you going?”

“A short voyage across the sea, nothing too strenuous. But I’d hate to miss this opportunity…”

Mileena squared her shoulders. “I’ll get the flower for you. I will,” she repeated in retort to the alchemist’s pursed lips.

“Your mother would not like it.”

“If we were to do only what mother approves of, we’d be doing nothing but photosynthesis all day long!”

He crossed his arms, studying her. “Only if you promise me you will be careful.”

A monthly writing prompt list for Juniplex (aka the JunitaryIndustrialComplex), hosted by khonri.com on bluesky, which is a month-long prompt game focused on micro-worldbuilding organized forces (militaries, adventurer guilds, martial sects, etc.)! They lived in the woods and the marshes, the lochs and the seas, and in areas of The Map less inhabited by mortals, so much so that your average person from a village or town could never cross paths with one in all their days.

Still, everyone knew the tales: never stray from the path, never give a stranger your name, never stand still in the centre of a ring of mushrooms. Those who practiced a faith clutched their sacred books and tokens close to their chest.

He does, but for atypical reasons bc something went wrong. He was meant to do his traveling service, going off alone to learn and work. Apprentices aren't disallowed from coming back home, but the idea is to work on independence. Farley probably would have come back a lot more than he should 😂

Farley thinks the whole world of Alcie. He can't feel scared when she's around. He admires the kind of person she is, what she believes, her skill in not only magic but empathy with children. He relies on her so much that she actually had to kick him out so that his growth as a witch could progress.

She's direct and logical, with strong emotional insight. She has many apprentices and usually stays at her homestead with them, teaching as her full time job. She's also a granny, a title earned over time for a very strong and wise witch. And autistic! Which makes her magic strong, but volatile.

#AwesomeCharacters Oh very good prompt for Alcie So, waterwitches use the term "witchmother" for their masters, a term that arose bc of the fact that waterwitch apprentices tend to be so young that they are effectively raised by their teacher. Farley's is Alcie, and he is SO attached to her.

I wrote this a couple days ago when I was mad & stressed about Canvas being hacked as I'm trying to finish my grading 😂😅 Xa'aba is in a *mood*. I might possibly tone this down at some point, but I quite like it for now 😈 She goes & tortures some dudes for funsies after this lol #GodsOfAtalantis

Perhaps Xa’aba had returned to her old Absorption habits because she needed a taste of power again, to balance out the frustration.
Icozoue had refused to give her the satisfaction she craved. She supposed she ought to have expected that, though the rejection filled her with enough rage she could have strangled the next person she met. She imagined returning to Icozoue’s room, obliterating the door with her crystal whether Icozoue liked it or not, pinning Icozoue to her bed and squeezing her throat between her hands until the light faded from her eyes. She could have done it. She could have even made Icozoue like it. She could have reached deep into her beautiful stubborn mind and made her beg for more as Xa’aba snuffed her out.

Drisal sat, and his brother sagged against him in exhausted, companionable silence. Treasuring it, Drisal kneaded his shoulder. It felt wonderful, though it was not for himself he did it.

"What could we do if it works?" Rushak
wondered after a few moments. "We cannot keep it for only ourselves. Homelonging affects everyone. A cure ... think of it! It could expand the world for all. Not to mention how it would help the warriors."

He felt his brother's spirit lofting on the WINGs of his idea, even as his own heart sank. He sighed. "I don't know how we could do that. Everyone would have to carry one. It wouldn't be a cure, only a shield.
Lose it, and the homelonging will return."

"Oh."

A pang went through him. "I don't—we'll
worry about that later. We don't know yet if it will work at all. Right now, let's worry about you."

“I’m always game for civility.” Nik’s smile was brittle.
“Excellent. This way, please.”
The bandit leader dismissed the others, closed the tent flap behind him, and turned to face them. “Well, we will likely be spending a great deal of time together while we wait for the ransom, but there is no reason for it to be overly unpleasant for either of you. I am a reasonable man. If you cooperate, you can live here in relative comfort. And when your people come for you, you will be released unharmed. Will that be acceptable?”
“And, if no one is interested in paying for us?” Nik interjected.
D’orril sighed and turned to T’orrin. “Do you intend to let your bodyguard do all the talking, your highness? I would prefer to speak like gentlemen, without the help running interference.”

Long #WIPSnips today, but my single instance of the word is in the passage immediately preceding Sable's "apprenticeship! service!" rant, which I just posted about a week ago for "work!" Hunt disagrees strongly, ofc. These two really represent opposite attitudes to society.

“Alexander,” he repeated. “And should you really be drinking up my coin like this?”
“Oh, now his lordship’s complaining how the pad’s spending her gains?” she laughed.
“But you’ve all these younkers.”
“Aye, what about apprenticeships for the children?” asked Hunt. “There are premiums to pay—”
“Apprenticeships? Apprenticeships?”
“Yes; Master Koby is about that age, is he not, and wouldn’t that be preferable to carrying links, with men of that sort as customers? Or perhaps service—”
“Apprenticeship! Service!” exclaimed Sable, angry enough at that she might have cuffed him, if her hands weren’t full. “You think I’d bind my boy seven years to some master, work without pay, sleep on his floor, live off his cheese-rinds and gristle, be chained to the shop and beaten bloody whenever it suits his caprice! Devil a chance of that, and less yet of service! You think a whiff of the fumes of a fancy name passes for glory for the wretches slaving under it? I suppose you would—you’d think it some great honour to scrub Mr. Aldridge’s gilded shits from the pot and wait on his pale, precious hand and foot.”

He smiled in welcome and extended his arms, both hands full of a weighty book. Rushak had finished the exhausting job of transcribing it from fourteen scrolls
just before the waidin race. In the interim, Lara and her cohorts had sewn the pages into a rich brown leather binding they had been working on for moons.
It was a book fit for the halls of the king.

"Is this not magnificent?" Mordan said.

"I can scarcely believe it." Lips parted in
wonder, he ran his fingertips lightly over the ornate knotwork design carved into the leather, marveling at the tiny details of the forest and animal shapes
framing the letters. Lara's work, unquestionably.

"Thou hast exceeded our expectations with
this work. Such a binding is fitting. This book will last as long as the world. Sit now, and learn of thy reward. I know thou art eager to exercise thy skill with Ancient Cirdaathan. Perhaps it is now time."

His hand was halfway there before he remembered and forced it back down. Owen was bracing, shoulders hunched and grimacing on Wesley’s behalf. But the pain never came. It was just an ordinary collar now. There was no power left in it except what Wesley gave it. And he would have given Owen everything.

“Or by the Emissary of Death.” At the Demonologist’s frown, Kitana sighed. “Akhïlam.” Vëasá leaned back on her chair, her forehead creasing in thought. “From your reaction, I assume you know what happened there.”

“I don’t know what happened, but I felt the repercussions. My home trembled. My runes disappeared. When I went into town and realised no one had felt the same, I deduced it had been some kind of Infernal spectacle.” Vëasá squinted. “Is this an official visit from the empire?”

Kitana shook her head. “I found… something there. Something I cannot explain.”

“You mean, you were one of the Bound? And she freed you? Impossible. The Bound can’t be freed. I told her as much.”
“And yet here we are.” Nik shrugged.
“According to you,” T’orrin replied.
“Why in the Void would I lie about that?”
“I don’t know. What I do know is that something funny is going on here. And you being a mage, well that would certainly explain some things.”
“Such as?”
“Someone lured my sister to that tower. Lured her there and trapped her. Now I think that was probably you.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. I didn’t even know who your sister was until today. Even if did, I told you, I was trapped in that tower myself. Not exactly easy to lure someone from there.”
“I never said it was done in person. Someone came to her through the Stream.”
“You mean in her dreams?”
“Exactly. They told her there was a prisoner in the tower that had to be freed.” He glared at Nik pointedly. “That the rebellion depended on it. I told her that was crazy, not to try anything stupid. She didn’t listen, clearly.”

"Because I knew he would let you off too
easily, fishwit. Which he obviously did; you've been having entirely too much fun in here. It was good for you to sweat a little."

"A little."

"Now what have you really done with Cesra's
manuscript? I don't believe your story about
Rhapsody taking it."

"No one believes me about much of anything
of late," he said, rearranging things on the desk. "It's true he was attracted to the silver case, and he took it while my back was turned." He examined a quill, unwilling to show how his feelings welled up afresh.
"He left me a BRASS buckle, afterward." He looked up. "You think Lady Cesra will accept that instead?"
