The time for the next Soundtrack poll has arrived! I want to know your Top 10 Video Game Soundtracks of 1988! This should be a really interesting year, especially with the introduction of the Genesis/Mega Drive in Japan. Good luck voting! forms.gle/9SaKWS9A8wE9...

Super Mario Sunshine is surprisingly more realistic than later Mario games in one specific aspect: here, Mario will start drowning if he hangs on to a ledge in such a way that water is flowing into his nose and mouth, as one would in real life.

Observe Mario holding on to a ledge that water is flowing over in Super Mario Galaxy (left) and Super Mario Odyssey (right). If realistic physics applied, he should start drowning since his nostrils and mouth are covered by water flowing into them.
However, in these games the air depletion/drowning state is tied to the swimming animation. As long as Mario is not visibly swimming, he cannot be drowning even if he is covered by water.
In Super Mario Sunshine, however, air depletion is decoupled from swimming as an action, allowing Mario to realistically start drowning in this situation (note him flashing red and his air meter depleting).
However, he is saved by Sunshine's (also unique among 3D Mario platformers) ledge tiredness mechanic. After hanging on for 20 seconds, Mario will let go. This is also realistic, since why would he let himself drown?

As of right now, the 1987 poll has less votes than ‘86 and that just feels wrong. So make sure to vote! There’s a ton of great soundtracks this year and they deserve a highlight!

counterpoint: the art *is* good in normal golf game because it is done intentionally, it’s not “beautiful” or “correctly” done by widespread aesthetic and technical definitions but that’s why I love it so much

While we're all appreciating Roosevelt, here is a small comic.

A comic depicting a little red haired girl in a library holding a book and approaching a large object like a flower patterned vase the shape of a sleeping animal body with a lid where the head and neck would be. She opens the lid and casually pulls out a large sleepy purple snake. The snake says to her "Can I help you?" the girl says "the lady said you'd read to me" the snake says "of course! Did you pick a book out?" and the girl happily says "Yeah!"
