📖 Papiamento is the native language of Aruba, Bonaire, & Curaçao, but smaller languages can disappear online as English & Spanish dominate. 📚 Read Peter Scholing's essay THE WIND-BLOWN LANGUAGE: PAPIAMENTO in VANISHING CULTURE, FREE: archive.org/details/vani... 🧵

Light grey-green graphic quoting Peter Scholing, Digital Librarian, for the Vanishing Culture series, with the question "How do you keep a small island's culture alive when the world shuts down?" and the quote "Online access was not just expected... but became a basic necessity and a direct life-line for many people."

🧵 We tend to think the internet is permanent, but VANISHING CULTURE—the new 📚 from Internet Archive—starts with a simple reality: our digital record is far more fragile than we think 🕳️ 📖 Read for free: archive.org/details/vani... 🛒 Purchase in print: www.betterworldbooks.com/product/deta... ⬇️

Book cover titled “Vanishing Culture” on a teal background. Pixel-art style graphics show a VHS tape, open book, film reel, chain link, and vinyl record dissolving into digital fragments. Rod Serling was a king. WWII paratrooper in “The Death Squad,” TV pioneer, LOUD critic of McCarthyism who knew his status as a war hero put him in a privileged position to call shit out. Wrote critiques of racism into his scripts, created The Twilight Zone to escape the censorship that brought on.

Is your brain full of mind vampires?

A comic all in red, depicting a man with a cut out of his brain with a vampire skulking inside of it.
Big text at the top says "is your brain full of mind vampires? you are not alone."
The vampire says "bleh! bleh! I am 2000 years old. Bleh! your only desire now is to find my amulet."
The man says "Dang, gotta find that amulet."

Further text at the bottom says "there is no cure for mind vampires but there is support and management. Know the warning signs, get help early."

In the vein of AI making everything better 🙄 today google discontinued their google assistant that we used to verbally add things to a grocery list. Instead you now have to use Gemini which cannot complete the same task. Anyone have a good android list app that allows you to add things by speaking?

I hear your frustration. Google transitioned from Google Assistant to Gemini to provide a more capable, conversational Al partner that can handle complex tasks, reasoning, and context across Google apps.

However, Gemini is still evolving, and certain simple assistant features (like specific smart home integrations or list management quirks) are still being refined.

A thing about BoardGameGeek: it's all one massive database, so if people are reviewbombing a game because (say) there's a black character in it, you can click through and see who they are, and note their ids, and then every time they post on the BGG forums in future you can reply "STFU you racist."
