I wrote some stuff about making it a full year after my layoff. (1/2)

One year ago, on a Friday afternoon, I joined a meeting that had been originally scheduled for a Wednesday with my new boss. I had come prepared with notes to discuss some of the concerns I had with changes that we were making to the department. Things that were going to make my life harder, or at least put me in a position that made me feel really uncomfortable. She had been in meetings offsite all week, comma, so moving it to a Friday didn't seem all that strange to me.

What did seem strange was that after a few seconds, HR joined.

The corporate speak started almost immediately: Realignment, eliminated position, not performance-based, etc. But the end result was that, a few days after my six-year anniversary with the company (longer than I had held any other job), I was being let go.

Shock can hit you in a lot of ways. Unfortunately for me, it hit in a Productivity and Crisis Management Variety, because that’s just…how I am, I guess. I started both acting and making a list at the same time. Immediate stuff? Tell my boyfriend. Tell my best friend. Tell my friends chat of fellow office workers. List stuff? Start cancelling subscriptions. Shore up the bank accounts. Figure out unemployment benefits. Start scheduling final doctors appointments before I lost healthcare coverage.

Oh, and all the work stuff: remove myself from client social accounts. Make sure transition stuff is documented. Make sure files are in shared drives so folks can access them. Because somehow, in that moment that would temporarily destroy my life as I knew it, I was still somehow concerned with…the company.

A company that had just cut off my income during a government shutdown in a city dominated by federal employees who are all looking at new jobs. A company that had just put a timer on my healthcare when I was dealing with chronic mental health issues. A company that, in the email that went out, related my “departure” to a single sentence and spent a paragraph praising the woman getting promoted who had bullied me at work for the last two years, if not longer.

Yeah, gotta make sure they’re taken care of.

Fast forward to today: I’m okay.

Unemployment wasn’t great on my savings, but it offered the opportunity to take actual time for me. Sure, I was applying for jobs, but I was also taking the time to visit people who I hadn’t seen in far, far too long. I went to conventions. I traveled just for fun, not to “recover”.
I figured out healthcare. It was not ideal (what is, in our broken system), it was not easy (ibid), it was not cheap (ibid). But I got there.

And June 1st, I started a new job. A better job. One that I can feel good about. One that let me grow and use skills I developed into something new, rather than being stuck in the same set of campaigns again and again. One that lets me come home at the end of the day and feel good, not just about the work I’m doing, but that I’m not getting absolutely destroyed by people who’s only interest in getting ahead no matter who they hurt along the way.

I can’t say that I’m glad it happened: I’m still recovering financially, and I can definitely see the impact that not only the job but the layoff had on me mentally. That’s going to take some time to find the mental strategies to work through. But at least I can say that I’m heading towards a much better place than I was a year ago. Maybe I’m not there yet, but it’s clear to me that I will be.

This isn’t the first time I’ve “lost” a job. It was the first time it came from a layoff, sure; but when everything happened with The Delegate, my first big job…no, my first career, was lost. As someone who came out of college way too career focused, having set myself a path of where I was going to go and what I was going to do, that hit hard.

But the biggest change in my life wasn’t the career loss: it was the people.
When I was no longer a Chief of Staff, I was no longer relevant to a lot of people who I called friends. The phone calls stopped getting returned. The emails went unanswered.

One job interview got cancelled by the interviewer not showing up, with an email later telling me that “with the news, we’re not able to associate with you right now.”

A text from a vendor wanted to know who was replacing my boss. No hello, no condolences, no offers to help. Just how he can make the next sale.
And the reporter and blogger calls didn’t end for a week.

I didn’t walk away from that career with many friends. But the ones I did have were the best that I could have asked for. I wouldn’t have gotten through that period without them, and they’re still with me to this day.
