If you ever wondered why visible light is those particular wavelengths, it's because life evolved to see in the narrow range where water is transparent

"Honey, wake up, the new Council of Trent just dropped."
Nicolò Dorigati, Opening session of the Council of Trent in 1545. Painting showing figures in a high room with a blue arched ceiling. Paintings of saints on the walls and an altar with crucifix at the center of the image. This is flanked by bright orange/red seats with bishops who continue towards the foreground of the painting. At the very foreground and background observers in darker clothes/robes congregate. Several look back towards the painter/viewer.

there's nothing innate about sadistic humiliation and violation of other human beings. those are taught practices and methodologies, and you are excluded from the group both for protesting and failing to participate in them.

An individual in Canada used ChatGPT for eight months to plan one of the country’s worst mass shootings. Yet, if you listen to politicians and media, the real threat of AI is a fantastical scenario where it might wipe out humans in ten years. They need to stop getting fooled by tech deceivers.

Generative AI is harming people today. We don’t need to waste time fantasizing about science fictional scenarios.

A million years ago I ranted about artspeak on Twitter, and Weisslink compiled it into his daily email, and then the painter Tom Knechtel preserved it and shared it with his students (who did not listen). Sharing again, in case any of you are tempted to hit me with horrible eartist statements.
A screenshot of a post from Facebook by Tom Knechtel lists a series of Twitter rants about artspeak, such as: "DEAR ARTSPEAKY TYPES: 'Durational' means the length of time something lasts. If you want to say 'a very long time,' say a 'very long time.' A TWO-MINUTE PERFORMANCE CAN EXIST FOR A DURATIONAL PERIOD OF TWO MINUTES. ... 'INSTALLATION THAT JUXTAPOSES CONTRASTING MATERIALS IN WAYS THAT HIGHLIGHT THE QUALITIES OF BOTH.' Translation: 'I put two things together.'"

I read Haraway as saying that to define gender by material/biological standards - or any essentialism - is fundamentally flawed. The ‘cyborg’ refers to real medical science, but is largely an analogy used to undermine the essentialist premise. Reading it too literally destroys the larger point.

As someone who was part of a choir that has sung in this venue many times, accompanied by a musician playing this very organ, this is such madness. They wouldn't raise the handrail/bars on the upper level for safety reasons bec it's a heritage site but they want to get rid of the organ?? What??

I also find it strange for AOC, who came up through DSA, to say the left is "never pleased." That is correct, but it's not our role to be pleased, and in fact precisely the opposite. While many leftists use electoral politics as a tool, our relationship to that tool is one of critique.

Weird to me that this is the thing everyone cites, because there's so much that's so much worse. In 1974 the first laws against marital rape were passed, but all 50 states did not classify it as a crime/remove the exemption until 1993.
