Fielding questions re: this article w/bizarre factual errors. First, there's no "Montecito County" in CA. Second, 2 fires are actually in *Monterey,* & 3rd in *Mendocino*. Third, 60k ac have *not* burned in either fictional Montecito nor real Mendocino.🤨

In Mendocino County, the total area burned by three fires grew to nearly 60,000 acres on Saturday.

DOGE has a very obvious feedback mechanism for its cuts.

If DOGE makes a big, broad cut against a million programs, people get upset about a few specific, very good ones like PEPFAR, and then that program comes back because DOGE's members are, thus, informed it was good.

I can only hope people realizing this won't damage the mechanism, because it's still useful to have professionals getting mad about some very good thing getting cut before it's brought back online as a result.

In a word, DOGE is responsive, which is unusual for the government!

I agree, but it would be more efficient to spend one hour ahead of time talking to experts or just reading up on the history of a program for [disease, student testing, nuclear safety, etc.]

Plus, some programs don't have famous proponents with time to dig into the weeds.

I'm highly sympathetic, but there really are thousands and thousands of programs and grants to cut, so I'm not sure the small team doing the cuts has the ability to go through them all one-by-one on their short timeline.

Maybe a system can be developed to assist with feedback.

More from the “what happens when you vote in a right wing government” department. Unemployment has skyrocketed in Finland, aided by massive and badly timed (procyclical) cuts that demolished domestic consumption, and is now the highest of all OECD countries.
Finland has the highest unemployment rate among OECD countries.

BART's newly released concepts for what they'll do if Connect Bay Area transit funding measure fails are terrifying. Phase 1: 63% train hours cut & 10 station closures Phase 2: Cumulative 70% train hours cut, 15 station closures Phase 3 (if required): END BART SERVICE We must pass the measure! 🧵
“Measure Fails” Budget Phasing Strategy
Phase 1 - In January 2027:
• 63% train hours cut and 10 station closures (20% of stations)
• 30% fare increase
• Target $30M of (half-year) reductions in fleet/non-fleet maintenance, police, and system support
• Balance remainder of FY27 with one-time resources and financial deferrals
• Assess: ridership/revenue impacts; performance of system support; impacts/risks of asset closures; and
determine if Phase 2 can be safely implemented
Phase 2 - If feasible, in FY28 (July 2027 service change):
• Cumulative 70% train hours cut, 15 station closures (30% of stations), and segment closures (32
miles or 25% of system length)
• Cumulative 50% fare increase
• Target over $130M of cumulative budget reductions in fleet/non-fleet maintenance, cleaning,
police, and system support
• Defer remaining capital allocations
• Based on observed conditions of closed system segments, study options and tradeoffs for
stopping train service
Phase 3 - When required:
• If determined BART can’t safely or legally operate with available resources, stop passenger service
• Use existing District tax revenues to secure system assets
• Work to determine system’s future
