Thinking about the future, and I'm not a pure doomer. I think the best metaphor is still @greatdismal.bsky.social's jackpot: an extremely multicausal rolling apocalypse over about 30 years, arriving at the same time as something not entirely unlike the singularity. I'd say we're about 10 years in.

this is all i am going to say on <thing du jour> 1: man. god damnit. for fucks sake. 2: i sure hope the victim is alright! 3: i'm beginning to think some of you guys are not as into anti-carceral, anti-punitive justice as you say you are. 4: some of you also don't understand second order effects

This is egalitarian resentment myth making. "It is impossible for one person to be significantly more productive than anyone else" is the logic of a deranged tankie. I've been told I'm significantly more productive even on solo projects than most. How am I externalizing solo work?

The definition of stereotyping is "evaluative and not changed when challenged" "Stereotyping, but leftishly" "Fat shaming, but leftishly" "Misgendering, but leftishly" None of that is okay

People are multi-faceted, but because I spend most of my time talking about technology and software development, I often get thrown into a box of "techbro" I'm non-binary, I'm ace, I'm *my own person* and I'm sorry if that doesn't fit into your view of "the enemy" but it's the reality you're in

This is an example of why the whole "oh you're an Xbro, I can dismiss you as a craven, one dimensional subhuman being" thing lefties have been doing since crypto annoys me.

My leading argument against punitive justice is precisely "who does it help? what practical benefit is there to doing all that?" its not efficient or logical.

The thing that’s going to separate you out from the pack when it comes to adapting to these new conditions and market changes is going to be *your ability to adapt* mixed with *your ability to identify and accomplish high-value goals. That’s it, that’s all non-drudge jobs in a nutshell.

Some people are like “I don’t like working with computers any more” after the advent of AI, and I *truly* do sympathize! I’m sure many folks who, I dunno, did manual drafting in the era before CAD also didn’t enjoy the transition and felt they were losing the magic, spark, etc. Same with assembly!

Honestly, yeah, not bad advice. In the age of AI, you are not a code monkey, you are the person that doggedly tracks down and learns (with the help of AI) what those edge cases are doing, you’re the person who (with the help of AI) Does Cool Shit that Works Well because that’s what makes you happy.

Yes, many sysadmins and graybeards did not survive the transition to cloud and gitops and programmatic infrastructure, I know it sucks, but that’s the job, that’s the game! You adapt to new tech/changing conditions or you eventually get edged out!

what i mean is basically this: there are 10^24 twelve-digit addition problems. to memorize this would require about 15 yottabytes. i observe that models are not fifteen yottabytes. so the model has to implement some function satisfying the condition "returns a correct answer to adding those numbers"

the answer to "why can a model do arithmetic" is that under regularization pressure the best way to simulate doing arithmetic is to do it

For a long time I've wanted a sense of how trump has or hasn't interacted with chatbots (we know he posts a lot of slop sure). And this TIME anecdote about Grok arguably leading Trump into war is just extremely bracing
Since returning to office, Trump has marveled at AI’s capabilities. He is increasingly in thrall to the tech executives courting him. In December 2025, Elon Musk returned to the Oval Office for a clandestine meeting. Trump spent hours asking Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, questions about his presidency and legacy, according to an official present. At the time, Trump was ordering missile strikes against Venezuelan boats he alleged were smuggling drugs into the U.S. He asked Grok how Venezuelans would react if the U.S. captured Maduro. According to the official present, the chatbot responded that Maduro was a repressive and deeply unpopular dictator and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall. After Trump ordered the mission to seize Maduro, the following month, celebrations broke out in the streets. Trump, according to officials, came away thinking Grok was ingenious.

Cannot emphasize strongly enough how insane that exchange is. "LLM tool use cannot exist because of my ontological priors about LLMs. But the talk about it indicates to me they're using a text classifier and secret calculator (how would routing prompts to a calculator work without LLM tool use?)"

Xenolandscapes @xenolandscapes.com · 4h
"LLM tool use doesn't exist because it would contradict my priors, its all text classifiers routing verbatim prompts to secret calculators even behind OpenRouter APIs, and the proof is all the talk about LLM tool use"

10-panel SMBC comic update. All the panels are dialogue-less. Two researchers are writing equations on a chalkboard. A janitor watches them from afar. The researchers leave as the janitor is still mopping the floor. The janitor walks up to the chalkboard and writes on it with purpose, admires what he wrote, and leave late in the evening. The two researchers return at dawn, and are shocked by what is written on the blackboard. Over their half-erased equations, the text "ChatGPT, do a breakthru, no mistakes, thankx."

I will also note that lots of genuinely intelligent and highly qualified people HAVE made brutally effective rebuttals of Yudkowsky/rationalist arguments: the thing is that they're essentially a cult, not actual honorable opponents, so they write these off or ignore them. Don't waste your time.

So fucking tired. All the time. I jumped into work too soon after the crash I think and haven't been able to let myself rest enough? But I fully rested for something like 5 days after, and I didn't even have concussion symptoms. This just feels like a particularly horrendous case of PPCS even now.

This is basically the classic u/acc position tbh: accelerated commodification, market competition, globalization, breakdown of traditions and trades, technological advancement, rearrangement, opens up space for real change; slowing it down gives the old systems time to reterritorialize.

Xenolandscapes @xenolandscapes.com · 20h
Yeah, that's also my position, pretty much to a T. A coordinated slowdown would only let them raise prices, consolidate regulatory capture, solidify user bases instead of the current highly commodified low switching cost & I don't buy xrisk. But OTOH this is not a surprising use of unions to me lol
