Oddly, they don’t include photos of the cat and dog. Here’s ΖΜΑΡΑΓΔΙΝ (Zmaragdin, ‘Emerald’) the cat (who is appropriately on its own luxe pillow), and a leaping ΩΚΕΑΝΟΣ (Okeanos, ‘Ocean’) the dog. 📸 Anatolian Archaeology
From a large floor mosaic which depicts a grid of panels, each with its own image against a black background, dividing by strands of guilloche. This one depicts a white cat on a pillow, its name in Greek above, translating to ‘Emerald’.From a large floor mosaic which depicts a grid of panels, each with its own image against a black background, dividing by strands of guilloche. A syntactic gem of Modern French, in my humble opinion, is t'inquiète. It's used to mean 'don't worry' in casual language, despite having no negative words and being literally translatable to 'yourself-worry'. Word order alone marks it out as a negative imperative – the positive would inquiète-toi.

18th century "cat contract" (納貓兒契式; based on a Yuan-dynasty original), laying out the cat's duties and responsibilities: tirelessly guarding the grain, repelling the "mousey bandits" (鼠賊), not messing with the livestock, not stealing numnums "of any kind whatsoever" (不得偷盜食諸般).
Scan of a two-page spread with an illustration of a rather pissed off-looking cat and the text of a 納貓兒契式 'Cat Acquisition Contract Template' surrounding it in a spiral. From 銜蟬小錄 Xianchan xiaolu, "A Record of Cicada-Nommers," a Qing-dynasty compendium of all things cat.

In Spanish, “for you” is ‘para ti’, but “with you” isn’t ‘con ti’: it’s ‘contigo’ instead. What’s this ‘-go’ doing there? It’s a remnant of the same Latin word that gave us ‘con’. So etymologically, ‘contigo’ contains this word twice: “with you-with”. Click my graphic to read the full story: 1/

[photo of a white tree, surrounded by green ones]
Trees, like animals, can also experience albinism, though it is extremely rare.

jumpingjacktrash
the reason it's rare is because without chlorophyll, the plant can't get energy, and dies shortly after sprouting unless it has some other source of food. so if you see a plant as big as the one in the picture that doesn't have any green in its leaves, it's getting its nutrition from the roots of a neighboring plant of the same species, feeding on the sugars created by the other plant's photosynthesis.
albino plants are basically vampires.

heywetotheotherworld
For a long time, scientists thought they were parasites, and couldn't figure out why the bigger plants didn't release chemicals to kill them.
Turns out, the lil' ghost redwoods benefit their hosts by filtering toxins and acting as a sort of backup immune system.
They're vampires, and they're commensal, symbiotic mutualists!

Btw did everyone already know that sign language can also exhibit metathesis?? 'cause nobody told me!!
Wikipedia screenshot

American Sign Language
In American Sign Language, several signs which have a pre-specified initial and final location in reference to the body of the person signing (such as the signs RESTAURANT, PARENT, or TWINS) can have the order of these two locations reversed in contexts which seem to be purely phonological. While not possible with all signs, this does happen with quite a few. For example, the sign DEAF, prototypically made with the "1" handshape making contact first with the cheek and then moving to contact the jaw (as in the sentence FATHER DEAF), can have these locations reversed if the preceding sign, when part of the same constituent, has a final location more proximal to the jaw (as in the sentence MOTHER DEAF). Both forms of the sign DEAF are acceptable to native signers.[4] A proposed prerequisite for metathesis to apply in ASL is that both signs must be within the same region on the body. Constraints on the applications of metathesis in ASL has led to discussions that the phonology breaks down the body into regions distinct from settings.[5]

Latin had six noun cases, but in all Romance languages except Romanian, nouns and adjectives only have one singular form and one plural form left. What happened? This extra large infographic tells you how the Latin case system collapsed – and why it's the accusative case that lives on in Romance.

Story time! The star Betelgeuse gets its name from Arabic يد الجوزاء <Yad al-Jawzāʾ>: "Hand of Orion" (kind of, see below). In the 1200s this was misread as بد الجوزاء <Bad al-Jawzāʾ>, and was transliterated into Latin as "Bedalgeuze." 🧵 1/10
