As I wrote this week in @msnowreports.bsky.social this betrays a misunderstanding of the fact that insurance protects against risk and the system depends on there being these low utilizers. Plus, the admin has pushed folks to virtually unusable high-deductible plans. www.ms.now/opinion/vanc...

It's such a heavily subsidized market that a true death spiral is almost impossible - the government picks up most of that tab as long as you qualify for subsidies. So you'll end up with more uninsured, and unsubsidized individuals will continue to drop out, and it also won't save the gov't much $

Fun fact: despite there being 4.5 million fewer people in the individual market in 2026 versus 2025, total revenue in that market through Q2 is down only 2% (from $75.4B to $73.6B) because insurers raised rates so much to compensate for the expected decline in membership.

In reading more deeply, this seems like it’s an issue where the physician had religious objections and the hospital failed to have other qualified physicians available to treat her condition.

Declaring yourself a ”church pension” lets you avoid ERISA governance rules and avoid having to pay pension benefit guaranty corporation assessments. So vaguely faith-affiliated hospital systems can suddenly become believer. But seems they’ve not maintained meaningful connection to the church since

From what I can tell, the requirement for there to be even representatives on the trustees from the UCC expired in 2022 (coincidentally when their atrium merger was completed). And the last time they really embraced their faith in Jesus was in a 2017 pension lawsuit…

Wesley Sanders @wsanders.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Makes me wonder if it’s the personal feelings of someone who is using religion as an excuse. There are lots of hospital systems who have excised any meaningful sense of being religious (eg in their governance) but suddenly find religion when it comes to things like avoiding pension regulations.

Wesley Sanders @wsanders.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
This system is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the United Church of Christ, two rather liberal denominations neither of which have objections to abortion or fertility treatment. Why the hospital system acted this way I can’t understand…

The other downstream effect is that for many enrollees, they simply don’t have the means to pay this cost share at all, which means hospitals will eat the bad debt. not a huge deal for the large systems with giant cash reserves but for smaller hospitals will be another strain on top of Medicaid cuts
