Mahmood’s successful moves to bring down overall migration by restricting visas are expected to give the chancellor, John Healey, an even bigger challenge after immigration significantly undershot projections from the Office for Budget Responsibility.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies thinktank estimated last month that the success of Mahmood’s measures, which have led to net migration being cut to the low hundreds of thousands, could cost Healey about £4bn.

On Monday, the Times reported sources familiar with the budget process as saying the figure was now closer to £6.5bn

Stories like this have, for ages, treated men's desire to harm women as a sort of background noise, a weather we just normalize and accept and try to work around. Feminism is among other things a process of denormalization.

Excellent, pugnacious piece by new Environment Secretary @angelaeagle1.bsky.social on defending England from climate impacts by rewilding & restoring nature - explicitly rejecting the arsonists on the hard right & the grouse moor owners who just want to burn more: www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Extract from Angela Eagle’s Guardian piece: “But some, including the Conservatives, have made the argument that rewilding lowers resilience to fire and that we should reverse restrictions on burning heather on our moors and peatlands. The exact opposite is true.

The evidence clearly shows that wetter, healthy peatlands hold more water and are less likely to develop species that are vulnerable to fires. The damage that has been done to these vital habitats by decades of burning has made them more vulnerable to wildfires in the long term, not less.

The solution to raging wildfires is not more burning of our countryside. It is to restore and better manage our environment.

Where rewilding has been prioritised, as at the National Trust’s Holnicote estate, you can clearly see the stark difference that it makes to the ability to withstand extreme weather. In areas where rivers and wetlands have been restored, the plants are green and blooming. Elsewhere, the ground is brown and dry.”

Rudy Giuliani is why a lot of people died during and after 9/11. Has anyone said he shouldn't show up? How about George W. who cut anti-terrorism measures that might've prevented it? Why does racist fantasy harm matter more than real harm; the answer is racism, including in amplifying these voices.

Neoclassical econ assumes rationality. The corollary of, "If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?" is "you're rich, so you must be very smart!" Thus, people assume that if powerful, well-compensated CEOs insist that "AI is changing everything," well then, *AI must be changing everything*. 1/

ELEVEN ANGRY EX-MONKS ROLLING UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT TO THROW THEIR ABBOT IN THE TRUNK OF THEIR CAR AND TAKE OVER THE MONASTERY, WHAT THE FUCK AM I READING
Take control
According to the local prosecutor, the case is linked to the tensions surrounding the leadership of the abbey. On the evening of the kidnapping, a group of eleven dissident monks arrived at the monastery.
"They reportedly proposed a new organizational structure within the monastery with the aim of taking control," said the prosecutor. It is said to involve monks from Bellaigue Abbey who had left the monastery some time before.
Bellaigue Abbey is not in the news for the first time.
The community was for a long time affiliated with the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (SSP), an ultraconservative movement that opposes reforms within the Church. In early July, the Vatican excommunicated this fraternity after four priests were ordained as bishops without papal permission.
