Woke 1 was 90% people saying eye rolling stuff online and in certain activist and nonprofit spaces and the moment there was actually something that suggested consequences- Me Too - dudes in power lost their fucking minds.

Overheard at the book festival: Older woman: Liberals are going to ruin everything by always talking about trans, trans, trans. 20-something woman: Are the trans kids on your lawn? Do you want them off?

I don’t think I’m the only person who will appreciate this
Triangular diagram labelled The Introvert
Hierarchy of Needs.

Top: Self-actualisation - A completely empty house. An arrow pointing to the house says “Nobody needs anything. Nobody is coming home for hours. Phone on silent.”

The next level is Esteem - Plans getting cancelled. An arrow here says “‘Sorry, we're going to have to rearrange.’ Oh no. That's terrible. I'm devastated.”

Next level: Belonging - One person you actually like. No group chat. No networking. No "let's go round and introduce ourselves." Just one person you can talk absolute shit with.

Fourth level: Safety - An escape route. Own car. End seat. Knowing exactly when the event finishes. A believable reason to leave early.

Bottom of pyramid: Physiological needs - Being left the fuck alone for a bit. Food. Water. Sleep. 45 minutes where nobody speaks to you.

A failed impeachment effort is an impeachment resolution that doesn’t pass? Like they got Al Green talking about the value of impeachment but I bet the number of people who know about his attempts to impeach (none have passed) are less than 5% of voters… And he lost his primary this year.

I love these because 1. It bodes well for a good political outcome 2. I enjoy watching seeing the faces of people who got us here telling us how they are suffering as a result of the poor choice they inflicted on the rest of us

Was reminded by another thread about my late aunt who would post Facebook memes about “teachers should be paid more than nba players” and with 100% consistency vote for Republicans who in practice wanted teachers to be paid less and ahhhhhhhh why are people

Easy answer for any Dem presidential contender who says they will bulldoze the ballroom and gets asked by a hostile press how they justify the cost is to reply - accurately - that it’s unusable because it’s an intelligence security risk.

Last post I will do on LLMs/AI today, but I think one way to pretty easily square “LLMs express feelings and work better when they are treated nicely” with “ok but it’s still obviously just a tool” is that, like many tools, it has been built to reproduce what we do and, like many such tools…

I’ve been thinking about how I think about this a lot recently and I am finding this vein useful, I think. Dogs are a good example, imho, for how to think about any artificial intelligence that might emerge anytime in the foreseeable future (and not, imho, in my lifetime).

what i really regret is the bastardization of intersectionality. crenshaw's insight was that systems of oppression intersect in complex ways, rather than merely additive ones. as a result looking for a singular scale of oppression that delivers an ordinal ranking of all groups is a fool's errand

I don’t know if I think so being conscious would necessarily make it immoral to use it for work? Like animals are conscious and as a non vegan I don’t find like draft horses particularly immoral as a thing. Anyway, they’re not, so this remains a thought experiment.

The wife tried to clean the garage door with a magic eraser today and that didn’t work. So she took the kids to Lowe’s and bought a pressure washer, to clean the garage door. Which she let the kids use to clean the garage door. Which is why there is a penis carved into our driveway now

Yeah this is the point I was trying to make a week or two ago about how like whatever consciousness may be and whatever forms it may take, things like pain and depression as we define them require a nervous system.

It's so annoying to me that everyone wants to wishcast term limits into being a thing you can lawfully do (I even think it's a good idea on the merits, though not really responsive to the current problems. But it absolutely, 100% requires an amendment)

It is hard to overstate how insane it is for the government to just role over on this in a prosecution. Pretty sure it is unprecedented. They want this to go away so badly.

That is just not true. The numbers: median house 1500 sqft in 1960s -> 2200 sqft in 2000s. They are ALSO more likely to have a dining room! 46.9% 1960s -> 50.6% 2000s.

Saw a comment on research why people aren't hosting friends for dinner anymore vs the 1970s. The commentator said the researcher should consider how people can't afford larger houses that have a dining room.
