The marbled polecat (Vormela peregusna) looks like a ferret dressing up as a cheetah for Halloween. They're native to a semi-desert grassland strip from Eastern Europe to Central Asia. Like a skunk, they can spray a foul-smelling fluid from anal glands. Let's talk about them. (📷: Petra Prager)
A marbled polecat photo from Petra Prager. It looks almost exactly like a ferret, but the arched back is sort of orange with brown dots on it similar to a cheetah, and the head has a white stripe that reminds me of a skunk, with a long floofy tail and dark limbs. This one looks alert and at rest.

🎃 Brand new work to celebrate it being October! 🎃 ‘Halloween in the Suburbs’. Black pen and acrylic inks on off white paper. Unsigned Giclee Prints: £50 +P&P Signed Giclee Prints: £70 +P&P Illustration size: A4 Email Nick at: nicktankardart@gmail.com 🎃👻
An illustration of a small old wooden house with a little porch. Its windows are illuminated by the light within. The house sits on a street in suburban America, it is Halloween. The neighbourhood is active with spooky goings on, ghosts in white sheets on the street and in the windows of the house, mummies amble about, glowing pumpkins on the sidewalk and porch. A black cat strolls in front of the house, a black crow sits on top of the little house. On the porch a little witch with her black dress, broom and crooked hat knocks on the door, trick or treating? Going to a party? Or an unwanted guest?
The illustration is done in black crosshatch pen on white paper, the pumpkins are orange with yellow glowing eyes in stark contrast to the black & white. Whimsical and celebratory…Halloween in the Suburbs!

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

"HISTORY IS MADE🚨
The Zoo is thrilled to announce this monumental conservation success - the hatchings of four critically endangered gharial crocodiles. The Fort Worth Zoo is the only institution in the United States to have produced multiple offspring of this critically endangered species. (To date, only one other institution has produced a single offspring in 2016.) In the wild, it is estimated that only about 200 reproducing adults remain. We are so proud of our ectotherms team for this historic achievement!"

**Lights Out Alert Sunday & Monday Nights** Birdcast is estimating 300-400 million birds will be in flight.
From meteorologist Eric Snitil

**Lights Out Alert Sunday & Monday Nights**

"Heads up birders, I would not be surprised if the biggest bird migration night of the year happens over the next 2 nights. Birdcast is estimating 300-400 million birds will be in flight. That is a lot, but the pattern could not be better for migratory birds. A massive area of high pressure will turn the low level winds from the northeast to the southwest across most of the US. The last time we had anything similar to this in the fall was early October last year when a record 1.25 billion birds were in flight. I doubt we get to that level, but I suspect the number will top 500 million especially Monday night which looks to be the bigger of the two nights. You can help by turning off those outdoor lights on big migration nights, and the next 2 nights is about as big as it gets."

Hydrangea Forest, Japan
Tumbling in soft, pastel cascades down a shaded woodland slope, a dense carpet of hydrangeas (ajisai) transforms a towering cedar grove into a sea of muted color. Rounded mophead clusters in shades of cerulean blue, lavender, deep violet, and blush mauve crowd the understory, their delicate petals luminous against dark, moist earth and lush foliage. Soaring vertically through the floral expanse, the straight, dark trunks of Japanese cedar (sugi) create a rhythmic structural grid, filtering soft, diffused light through the high canopy to bathe the forest floor in a cool, overcast glow.

Native to Japan, the hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) has long been celebrated as the definitive herald of tsuyu—the early summer rainy season. Frequently cultivated in woodland precincts and temple grounds—giving rise to the beloved moniker Ajisai-dera ("Hydrangea Temples") across regions like Kamakura and Kyoto, as well as expansive mountain sanctuaries like Michinoku in Iwate—the flower thrives in acidic, damp soil. In classical Japanese literature and poetry, ajisai is known colloquially as nanatenge ("seven transformations") due to the way its petals shift hue from pale green to brilliant blue or violet as the rain changes the soil chemistry. This dynamic shift made the flower an enduring symbol of transformation, patience, and gentle resilience through the damp, mist-laden months of June and July.
