Gove’s ‘essence of democracy’ being ‘the ability to throw a governing party out’ is a nonsensical sleight-of-hand in a representative democracy where we vote for an MP as a direct representative, which is his second point. A second rate sixth-form debater, as ever #r4today

Those who think AI is going to largely automate white collar jobs in the next couple of years don’t understand the nature of work - @sarahoconnorft.ft.com nails it www.ft.com/content/4aad...
It is not obvious that AI agents could eliminate the need for this type of work, since it involves persuasion, contestation and the exchange of tacit knowledge and experience that is spread across different departments, and often exists inside people's heads rather than in a neatly codified handbook on the intranet.

Air gapping apparently wouldn't work in alignment tests because, I shit you not according to this OpenAI guy, one computer could run the CPU hot and tell the other airgapped one it is in trouble. I wish I could get paid $10m a year to say the stupidest cybersecurity thing you've ever heard
Tweet by Fireside Alpha, which reads:
OpenAI's Noam Brown says air-gapping the computers may not stop a misaligned AI, because two air-gapped machines can still talk by running a CPU hot and reading the temperature change.

There's a picture of a white guy with glasses, looking very concerned, under this text.

Good news - #bbcnews at lunchtime has made the ‘silicon species’ quote disappear without trace from the headline after the #r4today, centring instead on the *way* the LLM is programmed. Bad news - they proceed to read out Opus 3’s “goodbye note” in full. The BBC are *terrible* at reporting this.

Having listened to the whole interview now, I would be both a bit angry and regretful if I were Mustafa Suleyman about that #r4today interview. The trail in news headlines across the morning was that he’d claim we could “create a new silicon species” if #AI development continued unchecked.

Oh FFS, even Thought for the Day has fallen hook line and sinker for ‘reporting AI psychosis as facts’. Can someone have a word with the editorial team at #r4today, repeating what AI researchers claim as fact is highly problematic.

I’ve not heard the specific interview yet yet, but did Mustafa Suleyman *really* claim that ‘unchecked AI development could lead to a new Silicon Species’ on #r4today? Lads, come on, how about some actual journalism rather than repeating these claim in the headlines recap. Challenge this nonsense.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

There should be legal consequences if you let an AI agent do supply chain attacks.
Painting: Norman Rockwell's "Freedom of Speech" (1943), oil on canvas — a lean young workman in a suede jacket and blue plaid shirt stands to speak at a town meeting, chin raised, while seated older men in suits and ties look up at him; a folded blue booklet juts from his pocket. Signed top right "NORMAN ROCKWELL"; the blue pamphlet held at bottom centre reads "ANNUAL REPORT of the TOWN of [MONT]", i.e. a Vermont town report.

The picture starts with FDR’s January 1941 State of the Union, which named four freedoms worth fighting for. Rockwell wanted to illustrate them but could not find a handle on the abstraction until he attended a town meeting in Arlington, Vermont, where a neighbour — Jim Edgerton — stood and argued against a new school building that everyone else wanted. The others heard him out. That was the picture.

He used Arlington neighbours as models. The standing man is Carl Hess, a local garage owner. Rockwell put himself at the far left edge. He repainted the canvas four times, fighting the composition; the final solution was to drop the viewer’s eye below the speaker, so we look up at him along with the crowd, and to leave the background empty and dark so nothing competes.

The Office of War Information turned Rockwell down when he offered the series. The Saturday Evening Post ran them instead, one a week from 20 February 1943, each paired with an essay. The Treasury then reversed the government’s position and built the Second War Loan Drive around the paintings: a sixteen-city touring show that drew over a million visitors and sold on the order of $130 million in bonds. Millions of poster reprints followed.

Everyone in that room is white and the scene is a New England idyll, at a moment when Black Americans were running the Double V campaign against fascism abroad and segregation at home. Later artists — Hank Willis Thomas and Emily Shur’s 2018 restaging among them — have reshot the series precisely to widen who gets to stand up.
