Mamoru Oshii reads film critics to absolute filth in his live-action meta mystery film TALKING HEAD (1992). He was right about us then, and unfortunately, he's right about us now.
An animation filmmaker and his assistant opine about film critics, part one.

The director says, "There are only two kinds of film critics." An animation filmmaker and his assistant opine about film critics, part two.

The assistant answers, "Those who dislike animation and those who don't."An animation filmmaker and his assistant opine about film critics, part three.

The director replies, "No. Those who don't watch animation and those who do."

Hey California! Be careful this election because the big money creeps are trying to trick you (again).
There's a trap on your ballot in California. Here's how to get past it.
1. Prop 40: 250 billionaires pay with they owe so hospitals, schools, and food assistant survive the federal cuts. Vote yes.
2. Props 41 and 42: paid for by billionaires to cancel prop 40. Vote no.
3. Tell one person, because the confusion is the plan.
Yes I'm 40. No on 41 and 42.

the fact that like two weeks after a massive gang rape story breaks a fifteenth rate comedian can wander onto national television and call women whores and there are no repercussions and really not much outcry is a big problem for me.

If there were any doubts that BACKROOMS is ultra-mainstream, here's a commercial that lampoons it - uncomfortably well - to sell makeup. Anyone who doesn't know what BACKROOMS is would probably have no fucking idea what to make of this, which means they are 100% confident that everyone knows.

So with that said, misogynist by reputation or bad stuff implied is all fair game in this prompt. Dylan O’Brien in SEND HELP, for example, isn’t a violent criminal. But he *is* a sexist piece of shit and we want him to get his comeuppance.

I’m not saying it’s bad to feature that stuff in a movie, at least not inherently. I’m curating some films for a particular person and I’m trying to cater to their interests (misogynists get what’s coming to them) as well as their taste (not dwelling on violence against women).

What are some horror movies where a misogynist is cathartically killed, but where we aren’t forced to watch him commit prolonged/visceral acts of violence against women first? Something like the Anna Paquin sequence in TRICK ‘R TREAT, as opposed to I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE?

I find many critics these days think about those first two questions, but feel like it’s not their place to ask the third. But that’s the line, isn’t it? That’s where you’re able to recognize that the worst movies can look, at least superficially, like they’re the best.

William Bibbiani @williambibbiani.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Apparently it’s okay if the film has one, and only one remake. The sequel is also, by its very odd nature, a remake, so I think it’s got a shot.

I avoid writing lavish praise so that when I do make a big statement, it will mean actually something. WILDWOOD is the type of film I reserve my huge compliments for. I was literally - I mean, LITERALLY literally - slackjawed watching large portions of this movie. It’s a rare, genuine achievement.

Travis Knight’s WILDWOOD is such an astounding achievement in stop-motion that even if the story sucked, it would be a “must see.” But the story is wonderful (if a little archetypal), so the effort it took to produce this masterpiece was wholly justified. My review is at @thewrap.com!

My Fellow Critics: What was the last time you *dramatically* changed your mind about a movie? It could be a film you liked or loved at first, but you dislike or hate now, or a film you disliked or hated the first time, but now you like or love it.

Can you will a largely despised film into awards contention? One that audiences and critics rejected alike? DIGGER is presenting itself as a test case, and it's shaping up to be the MAGA movie of our era. It's a film that lampoons concern about climate change and rips politically charged art.

What Cage has done for literally the past decade is exactly this, he finds a weird eccentric script by a first time filmmaker, signs on, his name brings in clout, he makes the film, and sometimes it's not very good. But it's still artistic as hell. This is why I *love* Cage.

That trope is annoying, and Bird's commitment to perpetuating it in RAY GUNN speaks, I suspect, to the fact that this film was conceived thirty years ago and is only just getting made now. Otherwise, RAY GUNN is wonderfully made, with a smart sci-fi noir plot and a zippy, exciting pace.
Ray Gunn flies around in a jetpack. I guess in the future birds and bugs are no longer a thing because he's not even wearing goggles.

Is it just me, or is using sci-fi/fantasy creatures as an allegory for real-life marginalized groups an excuse for white filmmakers to tell stories about why racism is bad while still casting white people in most of those roles? This post brought to you by Brad Bird's RAY GUNN, by the way.
