Instead of religious freedom, where believers can practice their religion as they see fit without interference from the state, it’s a demand for religious dominance, where the state forces everyone to live in accordance with one religion’s dictates. If I can’t control them then I’m being oppressed.

Paxton has to be one of the most evil men in the country. Many children will die because of this. Pediatricians will flee Texas because of this and children will die from causes that have nothing to do with vaccines because there are no doctors to care for them.

Texas Pediatricians Face Paxton Investigations for Vaccinating Children (Gift Article)
Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general and Republican Senate candidate, has alleged a sprawling profit-driven conspiracy. Pediatricians say the accusations are an attempt at intimidation.

A fun detail: Poirot repeatedly describes the Macho Jesus his leetle grey cells dreamed up as like a “Mustang.” You might think this is merely weird and homoerotic, but it’s actually linked to a bit of misinformation evangelicals like to use to retcon Jesus as a high-T alpha male.

There's this understated "of course no one who cares about individual or collective privacy even a little bit should ever use this product for any reason" subtext to a lot of launch-adjacent Meta product coverage that gives way to blasé "7/10 because the battery life could be better" gadgetisms

Look, Trump welcoming the idea of a foreign enemy murdering millions of Americans isn't great, but at least it's nowhere near as bad as Obama saying economic dislocation can lead people to scapegoat others, or Hillary Clinton saying millions of Republicans are good, it's just the bigots who are bad.

In particular, the holding that headnotes are protectable notwithstanding the merger doctrine is atrocious. (For nonlawyers, headnotes are 1-2 sentence summaries of key points, and the merger doctrine holds that if there are a very limited number of ways to say something, it's not protectable.)

The order in the 3d Cir case finding that AI training is not fair use, in the context of the use of headnotes/summaries of caselaw is out. While I get that a lot of people will like the outcome, it's a terrible decision that's likely to benefit big business. www2.ca3.uscourts.gov/opinarch/252...

With great consistency, people who prefer authoritarianism to democracy envision themselves in charge. Could be them personally, could be vicarious, but they're always the boot, not the face. It's basically a way to say everyone should shut up and accept that we're doing my preferences, not theirs.

Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."
Ukrainian female soldier: Okay, I said the idea is this: There is enough time to empty one full can of 32 grenades and be gone by the time the return mortar fire reaches us. I did the math.
