Guardian analysis of government figures found that councils responsible for social care spent a net £42.8bn on adult and children’s services in 2025-26, equivalent to a record 71.9% of their combined core spending. There have been three firearm discharges in Greater Manchester (pop. 3 million) since 1 April 2026. Not three injuries, not three killings, but three shots fired in six months. I wonder how that compares to any US city.
Firearms discharges fall
In 2008, there were 146 shootings in Greater Manchester. This number had more than halved by 2020.
Since then, firearms discharges across the region have continued to fall -albeit not consistently - and GMP data shows there has been a significant drop-off in gun violence rates betweens 2020 and 2026.

2022 to 2023: 26
2023 to 2024: 28
