I wrote this whole thread this before I had time to read yesterday's NYT story. And everything I'm talking about here is what actually happened to Jane Doe. She has been consistent in her story, but a game of telephone between people invested in not believing her led them to claim otherwise.

I was telling my daughter about how many times, when I worked at a law firm, I’d walk into a partner’s office and laughter & conversation amongst the men would immediately stop. Fun’s over, get back to business, a woman’s in the room now. This wasn’t harassment, but it was exclusion nonetheless.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.
