Saw Daniel Kitson’s new show, Thrum, in Canterbury last night. I laughed a LOT. He is as good as he says he is – even if by his own admission he has ‘taken [his] foot off the gas, creatively, five to ten years ago‘ - his shtick is still sharper, more original than the vast majority of comics today…

Completely agree. Part of me kept thinking either of those two sections could have been published as standalone novels and, had they been, would likely have been met with more acclaim by reviewers. But the ambitions of this book go way beyond that. The way each section informs the others! Amazing!

Oh, one more thing: this books contains a two-page soliloquy about the beauty and joy of cunnilingus that was so good I read it to @charlottesmithson.bsky.social over the phone and she asked me read it to her a second time. If that doesn't get you to read this book I don't know what will.

This book is *saying* something about the current status of the human condition. It is saying something about *books.* It is not just a story but a story about stories. It is, better yet, stories within stories within stories about stories. We are lucky to still get books like this in the world.

It's hard to explain exactly, but The Coast of Everything ratchets up the expectations of endings while simultaneously withholding them, and then somehow manages to (repeatedly, over and over) provide semi-inconclusive yet also extremely satisfying not-quite-resolutions. It's like a magic trick.

While many drivers are careful and considerate, I see a huge amount of dangerous and aggressive driving on London's roads - and very little enforcement. Drivers aren't worse than other road users. But motor vehicles do far more damage than other machines when poorly controlled or recklessly driven.

I see a lot of people complaining about the undoubtedly stressful conditions at present on London's roads. But I see few people complaining about motor vehicles. Yet in the last 24 hours three vulnerable road users have died after being hit by people driving motor vehicles.

Terrible policy when domestic transport is the biggest contributor to greenhouse gases in the UK. We need to be going all-in on helping people AWAY from reliance on fossil fuels, not subsidising their use even more than we already do.

The WAR ON WALKING has taken many forms around the world. It’s often as simple as how we signal who space is and isn’t for. Once our eyes are opened to all the ways we’ve prioritized cars over people, we can’t unsee it. Frustrating photo contributed by @stadsplanering.bsky.social. #WarOnWalking

Back in 1997(?), a friend introduced me to Glyn Styler’s Live At The Mermaid Lounge. Styler treads the fine line between parody and performance art but pulls it off thanks to the wholehearted conviction he puts into his stage persona – plus finely crafted songs and a voice that fits them perfectly…

Loved it. All 747 pages of it. Fantastic – in all the right ways. Gorgeous writing. Mesmerising at times. A book that gives so much, that sets out to reward the reader even when it's bamboozling you... there's doubtless loads of subtleties I've missed – will definitely benefit from a re-read...

I am reading a book. The experience repudiates a commonplace about ease & simplicity. This supposed classic is short & clear. It is also filled with poor ideas & sentimentalism. It is simplistic. So reading it is like wading through treacle. By contrast a long, difficult book would command attention
