Every nugget of info that comes out about Avengers: Doomsday, intended to get me excited about the movie, makes me even less interested. What happened to that young man who was so excited to see the first Iron Man movie? (The answer: time.)

Now that it's October, it's a good time to remind you to read my kind-of-a-ghost story, "A Density of Spirit," in @exactingclam.bsky.social. It's about an exiled Nazi scientist who captures ghosts for industrial purposes and competes against the Manhattan Project to generate a ghost bomb.

I hate to say it, but the most natural place to drop F-bombs into Shakespeare are all the antisemitic lines from Merchant of Venice. It works any time the word "Jew" appears, the exception being places where there's already an antisemitic insult (e.g. "dog Jew," "villain Jew," "currish Jew").

J.A. Jablonski | Resolute Death out Oct 28! @jajablonski.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
🎉 Cover Reveal Day! 🥳 So jazzed to show off the cover of RESOLUTE DEATH, my academic mystery novel debuting on 28 October! Preorder info here (plus bonus audio narration of the opening Prelude): jajablonski.com/books/ (Book description in alt-text.) #AcademicMystery #CollegeMystery #CollegeCrime
Front and back cover of Resolute Death by J.A. Jablonski. Original art: Stephen Richards. Front is a presentation. Against an all-white background, is a large black raven in flight. All-caps, dark red title is set midway on the cover. Text below in a small, black serif font reads "An Osley College Novel." Below that, in a dark red font matching the title is the author's name.

The back cover shows more of Richards' design: black and grey, ink-wash drawings of tree trunks against a white background. Superimposed is the book description/blurb: a roughly, dark-red outlined box enclosing the book's description:

"Resolute Death offers an intense, immersive tale with masterful plotting. An essential read for those who love an intricately woven mystery that highlights loss, memory, retribution, and found family.

When a glamorous music professor is found dead in the carillon tower of Osley College, a small liberal arts college in the Driftless Region of western Wisconsin, Maude Ascham, the new chief of campus police, has her hands full. Her investigation leads to porn-watching students, an angry boyfriend, a betrayed lover, and feuding colleagues. Students, faculty, and staff: all are implicated. When the Dean of Libraries commits a gruesome suicide three weeks later, the investigation becomes more than a matter of murder.

Who is blackmailing James North, the bereaved, ex-hobo English professor and celebrated poet? Why would someone destroy the 175-year-old bonsai of the cantankerous college gardener? Was last December’s drowning of a senior music student really an accident? And what of Ariel Ellis, the eccentric, blue-haired barista, who is clearly hiding something behind their theatrical banter; and Esha Larkin, the maps librarian seen weeping on the old library’s roof at dawn? Each appears to hold a vital piece of a dangerous puzzle. There is a killer on campus . . . can they be stopped?"

The Shitbird by Spencer Fleury, published by @stanchion.bsky.social, is a riot. A wonderful read. Funny, fun, disconcerting, swerving between having you kind of enraged at the people the main character is dealing with and kind of enraged at the main character. He's just such a disaster. 💙📚
stanchionzine.com
The Shitbird | Stanchion
The Shitbird is the story of Colin McAllister, a seaman in the US Coast Guard, and a poor fit for the role at best. He’s an outsider, a stoner with a bad attitude and a smart mouth, a combo that often puts him on the wrong side of an ass-kicking. He only joined up because he was fresh out of options when he was expelled after a college party turned into a case of suspected arson. And when he finds the dead body of well-liked shipmate Fred Sobel on the far side of a minuscule Caribbean Island during a routine afternoon of R&R, his life immediately takes a turn for the worse. His shipmates—most of them, anyway—jump to the conclusion that he must be responsible. They want to take justice into their own hands and throw McAllister overboard in the dead of night, but the intervention of Fred’s closest friend—the popular Wade Lucas—keeps them at bay. Until, that is, McAllister's nemesis Dennis Hebert starts planting doubt in Lucas's mind. As Lucas’s allegiance wavers and tensions with the rest of the crew escalate, McAllister quickly finds himself in a very dark place. Once sure of his own innocence, now he's not so certain. If he's not careful, he'll end up just like Fred—and maybe bring the whole crew down with him.   283 pages Paperback Published on September 15, 2026 ISBN: 979-8-90214-223-2   About Spencer Fleury Spencer Fleury is the author of I Blame Myself But Also You and other stories (Malarkey Books, 2024) and How I’m Spending My Afterlife (Woodhall Press, 2021). He lives in San Francisco and Portugal.   Praise for The Shitbird   “FUN AS HELL!” - Joshua Mohr, author of Saint the Terrifying   "In The Shitbird, Seaman McAllister doesn't know if he's more afraid to live or die, but either way, he's taking you with him. This book will suck you into its darkness and challenge everything you think you understand about the human condition. It is a thrilling exploration of a breaking (or perhaps broken?) psyche both reaching for and fighting against its own salvation."- Stephanie Austin, author of Burn   "A body is found on a beach and what unfolds from there is part Chandleresque noir, part stoner existential comedy, and it's all good stuff. Spencer Fleury handles death on the high seas like no other. The Shitbird is funny, brutal, bittersweet. Take this ride." - Adam Van Winkle, author of Count the Dust, editor-in-chief at Cowboy Jamboree Press   "The Shitbird finds all the joy in making wrong decisions, over and over and over again." - Aaron Burch, author of Tacoma

Sublimation by Isabel J. Kim: a wonderful thought-provoking novel. It's three threads merged: 1. A high-concept metaphor-made-physical rumination about immigration, diasporas, and borders. 2. A story about tech overreach. 3. An academic-style lore evaluation of lit/myth/religion. 💙📚
The book cover of Isabel J Kim's Sublimation. It has the author's name and book title in large white font, smaller text at the bottom that reads "the border cuts you in two" and the graphic is a stylized vertical striping that has identical figures walking away in both directions.

With all this interview talk: after college I was at an interview and I was in a waiting room with six or seven interviewees when the door handle fell off, trapping us in the room. We were all stuck there for 10 minutes wondering if this was part of the interview process. It was not.

I do agree with the discussion here but I also think there's more to "does the dog die?" and that's the fact that it became a cliche. The dog almost *always* died, even in books and films that weren't sad dramas. It became a shorthand for emotion rather than an actual exploration of emotion.

The problem with most "best" lists is the definition of best. Do you mean personal favorites of the voters? Most influential? Most fun to watch? These would all result in different lists, or, if different voters use different rubrics then it results in nonsense.

Really enjoyed Suicide Valley Trail Maintenance by Colin Alexander, published by @stanchion.bsky.social. One thing I'll note is that novella seems like the perfect length for horror fiction. Long enough to build dread, not so long you have to explain too much.

Very telling that in this essay Bret Stephens does not suggest a single book by a right-leaning straight white male that should have been included on the long list. I'm guessing he'd be hard pressed to come up with one. His issue is not with the National Book Awards, but with reality as it is.

The thing is, in the age of awful GenAI art and Harry Potter funding evil, we actually do need a return to some basic "what is good art" snobbery standards. But this is not it. This is the kind of bullshit that leads people to say "just enjoy what you want" even when it's destroying the world.

I used to scoff at movies when the villain killed random henchmen out of anger. Why would anyone work there? The boss kills his own people! But Trump does this! He throws everyone under the bus no matter how loyal! Yet people still line up to humiliate themselves for him! Those movies were right!
