PSA: you know what scholars love? Talking about their books! You know what you can do? Invite them to your class to do so. It’s great! You absolutely do not have to use AI or tell students to use AI to understand their books. You can get the actual real life person to help with that! For free!

Last night, my Literary Philly class celebrated THE RISE AND FALL OF THE ARTIFICIAL STATE with Jill Lepore at the Free Library of Philadelphia. My class was esp energized by Lepore’s assessment of their generation: social media stole their childhoods, and now AI is stealing their college education.

39. MIDDLEMEN (Laura McGrath @lbmcgrath.bsky.social). A few hours ago, I was one chapter into this brilliant ethnography of agents, editors, and trade publishing. I stopped to email my own agent; the word I used was 'gripping'. (No comment on his appearance or non-appearance herein). Fantastic read

Read this a few weeks back (re: illustrious US literary agent Nicole Aragi), but it still resonates with me, as my project has been a similar one with my agency: “she treats her list as a sort of literary salon”, & “I like my authors, they’re my friends”. (from Middlemen by @lbmcgrath.bsky.social)

A thing about writing a book about literary agents is that everyone that you've ever met (and many people that you haven't), will ask you how to get one.

Terry Belanger would begin his Rare Book School classes by physically destroying/dismantling a (well-chosen) old book. This is NOT the same as what Anthropic is doing! But there is a popular culture of preciousness around books that is belied by the material realities of their circumstances. +

👨‍⚖️ TL;DR: AI doesn't need to write high-quality books for non-AI book writers to get hurt. Cheap books at massive volume are enough and they've cut what the average human-written book earns in most genres and pushed human titles down the bestseller ranks. (10/n)

*whispers* you know we can do this cultural debate about art thing all the time, right? Websites and news organizations used to have culture critics on staff whose entire job was writing about books, movies, and TV. People read them and then discussed them. We have the technology to do this again.

One of the most common misconceptions I find myself debunking for academics that a *legal read* is not the same thing as a fact check. (And peer review is neither of those things.)
