ar and away the greatest menace to the writer—any writer, beginning or otherwise
—is the reader. The reader is, after all, a kind of silent partner in this whole business of writing, and a work of fiction is surely incomplete if it is never read. The reader is, in fact, the writer's only unrelenting, genuine enemy. He has everything on his side; all he has to do, after all, is shut his eyes, and any work of fiction becomes meaningless. Moreover, a reader has an advantage over a beginning writer in not being a beginning reader; before he takes up a story to read it, he can be presumed to have read everything from Shakespeare to Jack Kerouac. No matter whether he reads a story in manuscript as a great personal favor, or opens a magazine, or—kindest of all—goes into a bookstore and pays good money for a book, he is still an enemy to be defeated with any kind of dirty fighting that comes to the writer's mind.

thinking about how stable time loop stories are beloved because they represent an apotheosis of fandom thinking about stories: complete closure of all narrative elements, pay-off fully justified by becoming the set-up of its own set-up. no troublesome open-endedness or loose threads

i'm gonna have to lock in and read "Free Indirect", aren't i if even Otessa Moshfegh thinks "morality in fiction" boils down to "do we approve of the main character", the circumstances are dire

I think wanting precise outcomes and strict representation from a book is part of the literacy crisis. People are looking at representation and not the thesis of the book and how characters work within it.

Weirding the Periphery: How Imperialism Infiltrated Our Imagination Through Fantasy

Maybe the paranoid fantasies of reactionaries aren’t supposed to be descriptive (they sure don’t act like it when they’re shown to be wrong), but provide a casus belli for destroying a multicultural society diametrically opposed in its function to their isolated, lily-white small town?

Somebody should revive this magazine.
Technocracy Review magazine, February 1933. Orange, green, and brown dominating colors with a strong hand on some sort of lever, some gears in background. Edited by Hugo Gernsback. Articles listed in green text on a beige background in the center of the cover. Lead story: "Technocracy Speaks" by Howard Scott, who probably works for OpenAI. Then "Technocracy — Hero or Villain" by David Lasser, probably of Anthropic. "The Machine and the Depression" by Hugo Gernsback, and I've never felt so close to old Hugo in my life. Then "A Socialist Looks at Technocracy" by Paul Blanshard and "Technocracy and Communism" by W.Z. Foster & Earl Browder, probably friends of Bernie Sanders. Finally, "Technological Developments and Social Change" by Walter Rautenstrauch.
