“That's 40 *cents*. Cents are a form of currency one hundred times smaller than the reál. I'm not even going to take this. Come back when you have 130 reál.” Isn't it... evil? The order of magnitude between what is asked of a person -- and what they have?

It is less about whether horror demands high tragedy (it doesn’t), or even whether horror at its best demands it (it does), but about diagnosing a common, nigh-pathological American phobia for the tragic, and its alignment with the normative powers and mechanisms of commercialized art

THE PARIS REVIEW

INTERVIEWER
In the writing world, particularly in and around M.F.A. programs, there's a lot of discussion around things like "character" and "perspective," the mechanics of narrative. Do you think about
"craft" in these terms?

CARSON
Never. I don't think about it. I think people should just quit that stuff. Just think about something and follow it down to where it gets true.

ar and away the greatest menace to the writer—any writer, beginning or otherwise
—is the reader. The reader is, after all, a kind of silent partner in this whole business of writing, and a work of fiction is surely incomplete if it is never read. The reader is, in fact, the writer's only unrelenting, genuine enemy. He has everything on his side; all he has to do, after all, is shut his eyes, and any work of fiction becomes meaningless. Moreover, a reader has an advantage over a beginning writer in not being a beginning reader; before he takes up a story to read it, he can be presumed to have read everything from Shakespeare to Jack Kerouac. No matter whether he reads a story in manuscript as a great personal favor, or opens a magazine, or—kindest of all—goes into a bookstore and pays good money for a book, he is still an enemy to be defeated with any kind of dirty fighting that comes to the writer's mind.

thinking about how stable time loop stories are beloved because they represent an apotheosis of fandom thinking about stories: complete closure of all narrative elements, pay-off fully justified by becoming the set-up of its own set-up. no troublesome open-endedness or loose threads

I think wanting precise outcomes and strict representation from a book is part of the literacy crisis. People are looking at representation and not the thesis of the book and how characters work within it.
