My great uncle was a jesuit priest in remote India in the 50s, and he wrote a book about his time there. There was a tiger causing problems near the villages, and he had no luck hunting it with his rifle. So an elder in the village - one of the only people who knew how - set up The Great Tiger Bow.

That's not to say climate change is over and we can declare victory but the path to zero carbon is now extremely obvious and achievable and its mostly a matter of time (and how much damage we inflict along the way) rather than an existential danger we might not solve.

Welcome to Shrimp City! Teach your friends about a variety of crustaceans with this helpful visual aid - and set the record straight... bugs is shrimp. Shrimp is not bugs These shirts are designed by @the666cat.bsky.social & printed in Philly! Get one at SquidFacts.net (pls RT!)
A cream colored shirt with a red and blue design featuring 9 crustaceans and a fly. A scuba diving Fly Says a”am I shrimp too?” A pistol shrimp wearing a cowboy hat says “bang bang” a mantis shrimp says KO, the title says a”shrimp city and friends” a hermit crab uses a skull
As a shell, a jumbo shrimp is labeled himbo shrimp, and a yeti crab is labeled “snack bacteria cafe”. The fly has an asterisk next to
Him and underneath the whole design it says *the latest research shows that bugs is actually shrimp”

What animal is the most abundant on earth in terms of biomass? I'm having a surprisingly hard time figuring it out, I guess because the category of "animal" is kind of hard? There's tons of ants, but most of them are pretty different. What about humans? Cattle? Krill? Cyclothones? Earthworms?

Discworld QOTD, from Feet of Clay
No more kings. Vimes had difficulty in articulating why this should be so, why the concept resonated in his very bones. After all, a good many of the patricians had been as bad as any king. But they were...sort of...bad on equal terms. What set Vimes's teeth on edge was the idea that kings were a different kind of human being. A higher lifeform. Somehow magical.

Looks like a good deal for the WNBA. The current average salary is $102,000; this would be 6 times that! Max salary was $250,000; this would rise to nearly 6x. Players currently get 9% of league revenues; this would be substantially higher. Our story from February: prospect.org/2026/02/10/f...

I will never get over how beautiful the ribbed fins of Chtenopteryx are. Truly, they are nature's perfect ruffle chips. 🦑📷Steven Kovacs
A blackwater photo of Chtenopteryx squid. It has translucent skin, but it is covered in brilliant orange chromatophores, which completely cover the mantle, most of the head, the upper arms and lower fins. Its arms and tentacles are neatly spread out. Its fins have fin ribs at regular intervals, making it look like a comb or a ruffle chip.

is it time to bust out my "bigfoot is bears" photo collection again? if your mental image of a bear is a thick-furred, fat glossy male bear in autumn, you're probably not prepared for how weird their proportions can look in spring, or when walking upright, like they frequently do.

one of my strengths as a science communicator is reading the audience
How to make a cephalopod, part II. Internal anatomy. (Cartoony drawings with instructions)
1. Remove urogenital and digestive exit holes. (A human cephalopod with simplified systems in its body drawn in different colors. X's are next to the anus, urethral and genital openings)
2. Redirect exit tubes to nose. (The systems are partially rearranged, with arrows pointing to the nostril)
3. Breathe out to excrete, reproduce, and swim! (The creature looks happy and is giving a double thumbs up with the limbs attached to its lips. Internal systems are fully rearranged and an arrow points outward from the nostril)

this may be the pinnacle of my science communication career
How to make a cephalopod. (With cartoony drawings)
1. Remove limbs. (Smiling human with dotted lines at shoulders and hips)
2. Attach to lips. (Human with flat mouth expression, just head and torso. Arms and legs are floating above with arrows pointing from them to lips)
3. See? It works. (Smiling human cephalopod with arms and legs around mouth. Drawing of an octopus shows anatomical similarity.)
