It's crushing to know that Trump's dementia gives him a WEIGHTLESS CONSCIENCE. Despite harming tens of millions of people - he's blissfully unaware. Carefree, guiltless. The bright side is that his cartoon-villain henchmen are YOUNG & VITAL enough to serve long... tormented prison sentences. 👀

Trump's racism is not new, but I do want to talk about something interesting. And that is the way American fascists have been using social media to try to splinter the black vote and dissuade Black Americans from coming to the defense of Haitian and Somali people.

Josh Blackman's latest bootlicking blog post about very unfair media coverage of Samuel Alito has me concerned that Josh Blackman, um, might have missed some important personnel changes at the Supreme Court reason.com/volokh/2026/...
Good for Alito. Watch this hour long interview, and others. You will not see some sort of brooding, grumpy old man. Alito is charming, funny, and engaging. He just doesn't waste his time talking to elites who hate him.

Biskupic will never criticize the demeanor of Justice Ginsburg on the bench. Lord help us if someone writes that Justice Sotomayor looks "angry" or Justice Jackson looks "confused." Only the conservative Justices get this sort of treatment.

The fact is that Joan Biskupic long ago stopped gaining useful information about the Court. Other Supreme Court reporters simply write about the questions and answers during oral argument. They perform a useful service. But Joan wants to convey the impression that she still has useful things to say, so she reports on body language. I've seen her at work in the Court. She stares intently at the bench and takes careful notes. I think it's best to just skip over her work.

A new statue titled “The Orange Plague”, also known as “King of Injustice”, by Danish artist Jens Galschiøt has been unveiled inside the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, where it will remain through 8 October. Remember to stop by for a selfie if you have a chance. 😏📸

Justice Alito devotes an entire chapter of his new book to the emergency docket—and to responding to people like me (“the most prolific academic critic of the emergency docket”). As I explain over at “One First,” it … didn’t go well: www.stevevladeck.com/p/256-so-une...
In the pre-publication galleys to his new book, So Ordered: An Originalist’s View of the Constitution, the Court, and Our Country, Justice Alito spelled my last name inconsistently. This is, I suspect, the pettiest possible point on which to open in discussing a Supreme Court justice’s new memoir, and I would never have mentioned it except for the fact that inconsistency turns out to be the organizing feature of the chapter in which I (“the most prolific academic critic of the emergency docket”) repeatedly appear. The central inconsistency of Chapter 8, which is devoted to the emergency docket, is structural: Rather than tackle the subject holistically (as one might expect in a book), Alito mashed together the speech he gave five years ago at Notre Dame Law School with a “postscript.” The former was deeply flawed even at the time (among lots of other things, Alito repeatedly insisted that there was “nothing new” about the Court’s behavior on emergency applications during the first Trump administration and COVID); and the latter tries to move the goalposts away from the specific phenomena to which critics like me have actually objected. The result is to leave readers with a disjointed, inaccurate, and misleading sense of what the debate is even about—to say nothing of how the Court’s own behavior since September 2021 (including Alito’s) has only further undermined the already-flawed claims Alito made back then. Somewhere between the galleys of Alito’s book and the final product (which hits bookstores today), someone apparently figured out that my last name should be spelled the same way (and correctly!) throughout. The other, more significant inconsistencies were, apparently, harder to fix.

#OTD in 2015, Chinese pharmaceutical chemist & malariologist Tu Youyou won the #Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for her discoveries concerning a novel therapy against Malaria." The therapy saved millions of lives—particularly across Asia, Africa, and South America. #wow #WomenInSTEM
A close-up photograph captures Tu Youyou (born 1930), the historic Chinese pharmaceutical chemist, malariologist, and educator who won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering artemisinin, a breakthrough malaria therapy that saved millions of lives globally. She is positioned on the left side of the composition, facing forward while gazing warmly toward the right with a soft, gentle smile and thoughtful eyes. She wears thin, oval-shaped metallic eyeglasses secured by a black beaded lanyard chain draped over her ears, and a textured, dark red knit sweater featuring a black pattern around the collar. Her dark hair is styled back in a voluminous, short cut. The minimalist background consists of a solid, dark slate-blue wall with the blurry top of a white ceramic teapot visible in the lower right corner, casting a peaceful, revered, and deeply dignified mood that honors her immense contribution to global public health.
