Mistigram: Rick has been running one BBS or another for 40 years now, a milestone celebrated by fellow SysOp Darkman Almighty in this #ANSIart screen of a desktop computer that might well have been there at the start of his spree.

Mistigram: #ANSIart and #bonsai, both aesthetically beholden to severe constraints, might have more in common than you expected! @conchaos.synchro.net drew this ANSI illusrtation of a tiny tree and included it in last month's unthemed MIST0826 artpack collection.
A tiny bonsai plant, presenting the appearanced of an aged, full-grown tree, slowly sprouts from a small rectangular blue container.

If anyone has a Gigabyte GA-7IX or GA-7IXE motherboard and you see this in the 'Hardware Monitor' page, plus it locks up your computer, here's why it's doing it (check below)👇

Very excited about my latest acquisition. A Gravis Ultrasound ACE (Audio Card Enhancer) that I don't think has ever been used. Now I need to create a 486 era PC with some interesting audio/video cards in it :) #vintagecomputer #retrocomputing
This picture shows the Gravis Ultrasound ACE card on the left and the Gravis driver/software CD on the right. The ACE card is sitting on an ESD bag with the short audio cable meant for connection to the sound card of your choice.

I wanted to share the drive stack on my "comparability computer." I keep this old Athlon 64 computer around since it can pull data from some really old formats. Ever seen a Floppy combo drive?

Long story, but I obtained a Sega Master System! I never really played one back in the day or had any close friends who owned one. I grew up playing the NES. It came with 14 games, but curious what everyone thinks are the "must play" titles for the system? Looking forward to exploring the platform!

During lockdown in 2020 I discovered the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade and got quite far into the game. Recently I went back to it but had lost my progress so had to start again. There is a new upgrade for 2025, however, which I can now enjoy fully! The PS3 controller over Bluetooth is great for this.

I got a Pentium III up and running with my old hard drive image and the same cards I had but with a different motherboard. This time I have a 1GHz CPU. I'm not getting my hopes up over this cause it's a Pentium III and just sneezing at it wrong can cause the whole thing to brick itself.

PC Tools was one of the big DOS utility suites competing with Norton Utilities, while also offering file-management features that overlapped with XTree. By the early 1990s it had grown into a huge toolbox: disk repair, undelete, backup, antivirus, compression and more. Did you use it too?

Apogee's "Hocus Pocus" is such a fun little game. During its development, developer Mike Voss created the version on top of this graphic. The graphics were then redone by Cygnus Multimedia Productions, making the game one of the most beautiful platformers at the time.

Yeah that's not a good sign. If this worked before, I doubt it's a size compatibility or anything like that (64GB can be a problem for some PIIIs). It's possible the SD-IDE adapter is bad. Any way you can try it in another system or stick another SD card in it to see if fdisk can see a drive?

vswitchzero @vswitchzero.com · 20/08/2026
2/2 the cable, not the center connector. Does the SD card look right on a modern PC? How large is the SD card and just a single or multiple partitions on it? Does FDISK see the physical drive at all? or just no partitions on it?

1/2 Sorry if any of this has already been asked, but has anything changed with cabling? I know the Sintechi SD adapters have no M/CS/S selection jumper like the CF adapters do. In my experience they only work as master with nothing else on the same cable. Should be connected to the end part of

Man, that sucks. What brand of SD card are you using in these? I bought a bunch of "industrial" grade CF cards on eBay, the brand is called Cactus. Their better models are SLC based, so they should handle tons of writes and last for ages.

vswitchzero @vswitchzero.com · 20/08/2026
Glad you got it back up and running! One thing I used to do is make backup images of my CF and SD cards I used for retro PCs. Haven't done this in a while, but it's easy to do in Linux, or with Win32DiskImager in Windows. Can be slow if the drive is large, but worth it given all the setup time.

Another thrift store find. Parallel ZIP250 drive. Found the original power supply in a pile being sold separately too. The top window was rattling around inside. No idea if it works but have some Zip disks around here somewhere. Worth a shot for $5.

One of my latest thrift store finds. M-Audio AV40s. A little dirty but otherwise in good condition. Couldn’t test them there but decided to take a chance for $14.99 CAD. They wouldn’t power on till I reseated the fuse. Work great aside from some 60Hz hum. Caps perhaps?
