Long story, but I obtained a Sega Master System! I never really played one back in the day or had any close friends who owned one. I grew up playing the NES. It came with 14 games, but curious what everyone thinks are the "must play" titles for the system? Looking forward to exploring the platform!

Another thrift store find. Parallel ZIP250 drive. Found the original power supply in a pile being sold separately too. The top window was rattling around inside. No idea if it works but have some Zip disks around here somewhere. Worth a shot for $5.

One of my latest thrift store finds. M-Audio AV40s. A little dirty but otherwise in good condition. Couldn’t test them there but decided to take a chance for $14.99 CAD. They wouldn’t power on till I reseated the fuse. Work great aside from some 60Hz hum. Caps perhaps?

I miss this setup. Everything has been dismantled and boxed up for over three years and I never got around to setting it up again.

Had a perfectly good Seasonic SS-400ET power supply but the clip had broken off the 24-pin ATX connector. Bought a mini-fit jr depinning tool and replaced the connector in about 10 minutes. So easy when you have the right tool for the job 😁

Check out this amazing looking Luna Moth I saw on the side of my house. It stayed there for hours.

I occasionally find famous overclocking memory modules on lowly IDE hard drive PCBs. Always makes me smile. Winbond BH-5 and 6 were incredible clockers and could take well over 3.3V. Time to start harvesting them from dead drives? 😁

Even though it has a green sticker and checkmark on it. What are the odds it still works properly in 2026 😁

Am I going to regret buying this questionable as-is ATI Radeon 9500 Pro for $35? Only time will tell 😁

Always wanted one of these amazing looking Swiftech s370/462 CPU heatsinks. Super hefty with spiral “helicoid” pins for extra surface area. The fan I suspect is a jet engine 😁 Peak 2001 air cooling flex 💪

Another thrift store find. Higher end 2011 era Gigabyte AM3 board. Smelt of cigarettes SOOO BAD. Everything white on it looks yellow/brown. Pass.

My local thrift store had a bunch of these Symbol handhelds. I assume they are barcode scanners with terminal client capabilities? Anyone seen these before?

This Asus CUV4X's original caps are almost all Rubycon except for these three OST/I.Q branded ones. They don't look bad, but seemed a shame to not be 100% ruby. It got ZLH series replacements. 10V and way smaller too. Will test the OSTs later.

I bought one of the coolest looking early 2000s Lian-Li cases - the PC35. BNIB and arriving today. I plan to build a high-end 2001 gaming system in it based on the original Athlon XP 1800+. Obviously needs RAID0 with those lockable bays :) .. now to find a pair of working IBM Deskstar drives 🫠

Observed behind the glass at the local thrift store. Definitely not thrift store pricing though 😕 The price tag is $599 “without game or expansion” apparently. It was gone when I returned a couple days later so someone must have bought it.

Very nice! I was always curious about these PC104 SBCs and picked one up recently. This one is the Aaeon PCM-6894 - has a Celeron Tualatin chip in it currently. Also came with a PCI riser. Are there any standard cases for these that you know of?

Never owned a P4 back in the day but starting to explore the platform. Always wanted to try out the earliest socket 423 with RDRAM. Came with a 1.3 (slowest P4 I believe). Hopefully this nasty scratch on the back will be okay. I have a heatsink and retention bracket for it somewhere too.

The second board I’m recapping is this Gigabyte GA-7ZXE. It’s full of the infamous “Choyo” brand caps from the plague era. Even the tiny ones are Choyo. Many are buldging. It’s getting the full Rubycon ZLH treatment.

One of the boards I’ll be recapping is this Shuttle slot-a board. Full of I.Q brand caps and all failed. Notice how many are angled because the burst from the bottom instead of the vents on top. Lots of crustiness to clean after removal

Don’t usually find anything interesting at the Thrift store but made a purchase today. Old tower case with an ASUS A8N-SLI motherboard, A64 CPU, two IDE DVD drives and a floppy. Paid $9.48. Is socket 939 retro yet? Was a special era for me anyway 😁

4/4 And last but not least, the ASUS CUV4X rev 1.03. All the caps look great (mostly Rubycon brand) and it's got one of the tornado style heatsinks on it, which is very neat. The CPU is a P3 1GHz coppermine.

3/4 There were a few other cards in there, including a Linksys PCI NIC and an NEC based USB card. The sound card is the popular SB Live 5.1.

2/4 The graphics card is one of the original ATI Radeon R100 models! This one is the Radeon 7200 64MB, which is a mid-range card. Not terribly common and was a good card!

1/4 Lets open up this big boy full tower case I got a few years ago. Need a part from it so figured I'd document what's inside. The 5.25 hot swap bays are pretty cool. Common InWin design. Rather "interesting" cable management choices by previous owner with automotive loom.

I started my blog back in 2017, which was the beginning of "vswitchzero". I've given it a much needed revamp after sitting idle for far too long. Spent many hours wrestling with CSS to get it looking the way I wanted. Now to create some new content! ✍️ vswitchzero.com

Have the slowest Voodoo 3 on the bench today. The Velocity 100. Only 8MB of memory and one TMU soft-disabled (can be turned on easily in Windows). Runs at 143MHz, which is higher than the typical 16MB V3 1000’s 125MHz.

Finally decided it was time to cave and buy a PCB preheater for hardware repairs. Should hopefully make IC removal easier and I can try my hand at some basic BGA rework. 😬 It’s one of those no name 853A models. Was cheap enough to take a chance on it

Found a photo of the cable! Dell C4403 is the part number. That projector one could work, but you’d need to connect it directly to the monitor since it’s M-M. The short one I have is M-F so any monitor cable can connect to it. Don’t see it for sale anywhere any more 😕

I also found these cheap adapters on Amazon years ago. They don’t quite fit the port. I had to cut and bend the outside of the connector slightly (see top, which is bent vs bottom which is original) Bit hacky but they work 👍

Added a rare card to my 3dfx collection today. This is an OEM version of the Voodoo 3 3500 running at 183MHz. It lacks the TV tuner and massive dongle of the retail 3500 TV. Was listed incorrectly on eBay as a 3000 for a meh price. Thankfully I recognized it and jumped! 😁

Here's another 3dfx Voodoo 3 2000 I just bought. I managed to buy 3 of them on the same day which is a new low even for me lol. Broken, artifacting - but I see two missing electrolytics and a damaged SMD resistor that may be contributing. This one is nice because it has 6ns memory on a 2000.

Stopped by the local Value Village thrift store near my work at lunch today. I see old SCSI drives.. I buy old SCSI drives 😁 Worked with the old Proliant servers these came from back in the early 2000s. One is 10K RPM, the other 7.2 I assume. They are regular 80-pin drives inside the compaq trays.

Admittedly, I paid a bit too much for what looks like a run of the mill 3dfx Voodoo 3 2000. That said, usually buy broken ones and this one is supposed to be working. BUT... That's not why I bought it. There is something very unusual and special about this one. Can anyone spot it?

There is an eBay seller that listed a bunch of rare 3dfx prototype cards! As much as I’d love to add these to my collection.. Just way too much $$$ for me. Still really neat to see them in the wild though! I especially like the Voodoo4 4800 64MB and the high-density SGRAM Voodoo 5 5500s!

MediaVision was best known for the Pro audio Spectrum 16 but their most common card was the Jazz 16 released in 1993. Most had genuine OPL3. This one includes 50-pin SCSI but has no wavetable header, unfortunately. @16bitmanfred.bsky.social
