Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I really, really, really like retro games. So I put together a list of retro gaming gifts for the holiday season. If someone in your life is a retro gamer, and you want to get them something awesome, check out the post in comments. 131
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 24/09/2026My "origin" video game is River Raid on the 2600. It's the earliest game I remember playing, though my parents had an Intellivision when I was really young, and I probably "played" Pong as a toddler. But the first memory is River Raid. 170
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Hellcat Ace, the very first MicroProse game ever made. Developed by the one-and-only legend, Sid Meier with playtesting done by business partner and former Air Force pilot, Bill Stealey. Stealey took floppy disks of the game from computer store to computer store trying to sell it. 092
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Believe it or not, this game was an actual open-source game made by Microsoft. Back in the before-times... 241
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 18/09/2026I really wonder if this warning led to kids using drugs less or more. 131
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 15/09/2026One of the first fully-immersive Star Wars sims, that wasn't just a simple arcade game. X-Wing felt like you were really in a galaxy, far far away. 193
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Living in the NES era, seeing a preview that looked like this was mind-boggling. The idea that this hedgehog could go through a loop?! Are you crazy?! And look at those backgrounds! 071
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 10/09/2026This little guy was a pretty important piece of my childhood. When Vectorman came out, I couldn't believe the "3D" graphics in it. The first game was pretty good and I still enjoy it. The second game didn't do much more than the first unfortunately. 121
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 09/09/2026Akira Toriyama had just found success creating a little manga called Dragon Ball when video game developers, Enix, asked to talk to him. They had an idea for an RPG game on the NES and wanted to incorporate his style into it. The rest is history. 174
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 02/09/2026This is the original sketch from the proposal Philip Bouchard did for the game Number Munchers at MECC in 1984. He got the green light, but was asked to make it a phonics lesson instead. So Word Munchers was actually made first, followed my Number Munchers. 231
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 01/09/2026While the gameplay wasn't amazingly good (Makoto Uchida and team had to make last-minute concessions on gameplay), the level of detail in Altered Beast was pretty amazing for the time. 000
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 31/08/2026Still one of my favorite arcade games. Top Skater was entirely unique when it launched in 1997. The gameplay was amazing, and the music of Pennywise set the tone for the whole game. But the thing that set it apart was the skateboard deck controller. 151
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 29/08/2026Early EA didn't make games. They were just a game publisher. But they decided to take a risk, and one of the biggest early risks was supposed to be Mario Andretti Racing for the NES. Instead, the team, led by Randy Breen and Dan Geisler went in a different direction entirely. 3154
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 26/08/2026I owe this team a considerable thank you for giving me decades of fun. 042
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 25/08/2026Apogee's "Hocus Pocus" is such a fun little game. During its development, developer Mike Voss created the version on top of this graphic. The graphics were then redone by Cygnus Multimedia Productions, making the game one of the most beautiful platformers at the time. 132
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 24/08/2026Here is the original Apple II mockup for Word Munchers, done by Philip Bouchard. Charolyn Kapplinger, MECC’s senior graphic designer, and her team would take this concept and update the characters to the ones recognizable to any millennial or gen-Xer. 151
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 24/08/2026I had the privilege of interviewing Philip Bouchard, the man behind Number Munchers, to get the full story about how the Muncher games came to be. If you're a Millennial or Gen-Xer, you know the game, but do you know its history? www.retrogaminggeek.com/number-munch...retrogaminggeek.comNumber Munchers: The History & Development of MECC’s Classroom ClassicHow a Minnesota state agency and Oregon Trail's designer created Number Munchers, the Apple II classic that made math fun for a generation. 042

Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 06/07/2026Carol Shaw was a pioneer in the early video game world. In an industry dominated by men, she made her mark, impressed the co-founder of Activision, and made one of the most popular Atari games of all time - River Raid. Read her full story in the comments. 141
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 30/06/2026A failed space game. A Lucasfilm license. A controller built for Army tank simulators. Atari's 1983 Star Wars arcade game was one of gaming's greatest flukes and its greatest achievements. The story of this arcade classic is in the comments. 171
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 22/06/2026Special Guest post on the blog today! Søren Kamper from Star Wars Gaming contributed a piece on the development of Star Wars: X-Wing. www.retrogaminggeek.com/star-wars-x-... 021
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 10/06/2026A LAN party in 2002 wasn't a real LAN party until somebody broke out a case of Bawls. This stuff tasted like bottled Skittles. It was delicious. 320
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 18/05/2026One of my favorite parts about repairing arcade machines is being able to pull out at least a little bit of carpentry skills on it. My Daytona USA machine had a broken corner when I got it. Instead of using a bunch of Bondo, I just cut the thing and made a replacement. It turned out decent! 071
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 14/05/2026This is in my basement right now and it makes me oh so happy. 1120
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 11/05/202631 years ago today, the Sega Saturn made landfall in the US. To this day, it is still one of my favorite consoles. 190
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 11/05/2026I spent darn near a year working on and off on this project. What started as a once in a lifetime find turned into a labor of love. :) It's still not 100% complete, but I wanted to share the journey to restoring a Daytona USA Twin Cabinet. www.retrogaminggeek.com/daytona-usa-...retrogaminggeek.comDaytona USA Twin Cabinet RefurbishingIn the summer of 2025, I came across a Daytona USA twin cab on Facebook Marketplace. I had been looking for just the seats, or even a simple shell of the cabinets for a couple of years, but they were ... 030

Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 18/04/2026I know it wasn’t as groundbreaking as the original, but Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 is still one of my favorite games. 010
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 14/04/2026The first TV I played NES on didn't even have a remote and to turn the channel I had to turn a physical dial, which only had 13 channel options. 050
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 06/04/2026Just remove those cabinet doors and bask in it... 040
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 04/04/2026My first computer connected to the printer via a serial port. Also, my back hurts. 4100

Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 01/04/2026I feel like April Fool's Day is basically ruined at this point because the world is such a shit show that things that used to be comically absurd are now everyday occurrences. 😒 080
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 01/04/2026So many came later, and so many were technically better, but Dune II is still one of my favorite RTS games of all time. 031
Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 26/03/2026The whole push to use AI to make games look "better" doesn't make sense to me. AAA games look great right now, and in the past 10 years I've never thought, "Oh, I wish this great game looked better." The days of pushing graphics as a selling point are over. We want gameplay and story. 181

Retro Gaming Geek 🕹️ @retrogaminggeek.bsky.social · 19/03/2026Bad News Baseball is still one of my favorite baseball games. The mechanics of the game just feel right and it's so much fun to watch Mr. T give you a high-ten after a homerun. There are updated ROMs with updated players, so I can play as the 2016 Chicago Cubs. :D #retrogaming #NES 173
