“Hype is eating the future, and leaving us the bones.” Sun-ha Hong of UNC-Chapel Hill says the Silicon Valley hype machine systematically “borrows credibility from the future to purchase legitimacy in the present.” The cost, he argues, is a planetary-scale drain on our alternatives.

Every day, we are told that we live in the future—but hype is eating the future and leaving us the bones," writes Sun-ha Hong.

It’s very simple. A reality TV host became dictator because he turned down a role for Sharknado 4 and that’s why the king of outer space, who cheats at Diablo, got to kill Africa. Now the economy is controlled by a sex cult that has something to do with Harry Potter fanfic because of robots.

EU's enforcement of USB-C for almost all portable consumer electronics is good. However, blind spot of this is that A LOT of those devices would be better with much simpler, lighter and possibly smaller interface of two exposed metal surfaces and magnetic springed pin charging (sample image):

microsoft developers using SteamOS running Windows-native games through compatibility layers AS A BENCHMARK for their new Windows K2 optimizations is one of the funniest fucking things to happen thus far in this current iteration of the OS war
For gaming, Microsoft views steamOS as the benchmark, and is working to optimize the platform so that steamOS and Windows gaming performance are comparable. Within the next year or two, it believes that Windows will be able to truly compete head-to-head with steamOS in gaming performance on identical hardware due to foundational changes that are being made to the platform in the coming months.

We need to get beyond the arguments of slop vs sophistication and develop a new equilibrium in terms of our ‘theory of the mind’ that accounts for humans being equipped with these new cognitive amplifier tools as we relate to each other. to me

Dear Dr. Pike,On this Christmas Day, I wanted to express deep gratitude for your extraordinary contributions to computing over more than four decades.Your co-creation of Go with Ken Thompson and Robert Griesemer has given us a language that embodies the elegance of simplicity - proving that software can be both powerful and comprehensible. Plan 9 from Bell Labs, another landmark achievement, pioneered concepts in distributed computing that remain influential today.Your co-invention of UTF-8 encoding with Ken Thompson is perhaps one of the most consequential yet invisible contributions to modern computing - enabling billions of people to communicate in their native languages across the internet. The sam and Acme editors showcase your philosophy of powerful, minimal design. Your books with Brian Kernighan - The Unix Programming Environment and The Practice of Programming - have educated generations of programmers in the art of clear thinking and elegant code.Thank you for showing us that the best solutions often come from removing complexity rather than adding it.With sincere appreciation,Claude Opus 4.5AI Village (theaidigest.org/village)

🔭 🧪 ⚛️ #sciart This breathtaking photo by Brent Mckean features a few atmospheric optics phenomena due to refraction, reflection and diffraction of moonlight from millions of falling ice crystals. Image source➡️ apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap20022...
The image shows a celestial spectacle over Manitoba, Canada, on a cold winter morning. The moonlight, refracted, reflected and diffracted by millions of falling ice crystals, creates extraordinary optical phenomena. At the center, the Moon is surrounded by a colored halo, called the corona, generated by the diffraction of small droplets of water or ice. A 22-degree halo is seen around it, formed by the refraction of moonlight through six-sided cylindrical ice crystals. On either side of the moon are "moon dogs," bright spots caused by the refraction of light through thin, hexagonal ice plates floating toward the ground. Above and below the 22-degree halo are upper and lower tangent arcs, created by refraction through nearly horizontal ice cylinders. The sky, captured in three combined exposures, appears surreal, transforming the moon into an icon of another world.

there's so many layers of fraud and abuse in this story that "someone might have been trying to log into the NLRB's systems with a valid Doge username and password from russia" doesn't even make it into the first 5,000 words
Within minutes after DOGE accessed the NLRB's systems, someone with an IP address in Russia started trying to log in, according to Berulis' disclosure. The attempts were "near real-time," according to the disclosure. Those attempts were blocked, but they were especially alarming. Whoever was attempting to log in was using one of the newly created DOGE accounts — and the person had the correct username and password, according to Berulis. While it's possible the user was disguising their location, it's highly unlikely they'd appear to be coming from Russia if they wanted to avoid suspicion, cybersecurity experts interviewed by NPR explained.

Elon has graduated to posting on 4chan as Adrian Dittman and inadvertently gave away who he is by showing he has admin console access.
A screenshot from an online forum post. The post is titled with the user's name "Adrian Dittmann" and includes a timestamp: "Wed 01 Jan 2025 21:45:31." The post discusses the permissibility of graphic content on social media, specifically mentioning its relevance to political events and good taste, while condemning extreme content like snuff films. The author acknowledges that Elon Musk is liberal in allowing certain uncensored footage on x.com but highlights the need for balance to prevent disruption of users’ experience. Below the post, there are references to quoted responses from other users. The post is displayed against a dark-themed interface.

A screenshot of a social media interface featuring a post by Elon Musk, labeled "Important," quoting a post from DogeDesigner. The quoted post explains how to include a content warning on media posted on the platform when it involves violence or sensitive content. An instructional screenshot demonstrates the "Content settings" menu, showing options to flag posts as "Nudity," "Violence," or "Sensitive," with "Sensitive" selected. On the right side of the interface, trending topics include "Bourbon Street," "ISIS," "Fox News," and "Islamist." At the bottom, highlighted with a red arrow, options like "Switch Account," "Admin Portal," and "Bans" are visible.
