I'm being honest with Mike "Privatize The Enterprise" Smith in that if everything was private and proprietary nobody will ever know about the contributions that America's Most Honored Weather Scientist has made to the field because they would be "proprietary" all this greatness will never be known!

A tropical depression is likely to form over the next day or so over the southwestern Gulf of America, with further strengthening expected later this week when it turns northward.

I know I'm not the only one to say this, but if I couldn't share any of my work with other people in the field, I would have no motivation to do the work in the first place. Being able to share a contribution with the field is the biggest self-motivating factor for many including myself.

Regarding the private vs. public debate in Meteorology, I wonder if a lot of these "privatize everything" meteorology people realize that with everything private, their work (and thus accomplishments) are less likely to be able to be seen by the rest of the field since it is "proprietary."

All it takes is one storm. And this one could potentially affect Gulf coast refineries, causing gas prices to spike again.

Data from a given radar is routed through the WFO that manages it. With several DoD radars along the Gulf Coast, losing those 2 offices meant that 5 NEXRADs were offline: Mobile, Tallahassee, Eglin AFB, Moody AFB, and Fort Rucker. (3/)

There are plenty of reasons to be concerned about the aging NEXRAD network, but this was NOT an issue with the radars. This was solely about comms. A break in the NWS network occurred somewhere that took out two NWS offices comms: WFOs Mobile and Tallahassee. (2/)

While the Gulf Coast NWS comms issue appears resolved, with the growing tropical risk was seeing way more social media traffic about the radar outages that occurred over the weekend. Feel compelled to share a thread as seeing a lot of misinformation. (1/)

Not to mention the radar network has been underfunded and life extended for a long while before the latest stupid cuts to NOAA. Or that industry generally only likes to get involved in things with huge profit margins these days.
