At Caltrans HQ in DTLA (built early 2000s) one of two women’s restroom on ground floor is behind a double door leading to warehouse while men’s room is more publicly accessible and visible. I only know this because it was mentioned on a tour almost as if it’s a fun fact.

Yooooo remember a couple years ago when those three LA city council members were caught on tape saying a ton of insanely racist stuff and conspiring to gerrymander another council member’s district? That other council member was Nithya Raman. The voting bloc they were trying to split? Renters.
Nury Martinez [00:54:56] Nobody wants a little Armenian love? I mean, they have done anything to us. He's not a problem. Stabilize the valley. Nithya Is not going to get the perfect district. We're not going to give her a renters district. That's what she wants. I told her, that's not happening. You're going to get the district that you're going to get. You're going to have to run, and probably in a district that more than half of them don't know who you are. Go fucking do the work and see if you can get re-elected. But our commitment is not to re-elect her. That's not my commitment, right?
Herrera [00:55:24] No. She wants to rile up the renters to create a base and not do anything for the renters. But she's just got to keep that agitation going.
Nury Martinez [00:55:34] She's not going to get the renters. We're not, we can't give her that.
Kevin De Leon [00:55:37] Because the thing is, is like, for example, CD 1 or CD 14, of course, in the immediate for Gil's reelection. But then Gil has one term. It's not us. It's for Latino strength for the foreseeable future whereas for her, it's not about- it's about just her as an individual.
Gil Cedillo [00:55:55] Right.
Herrera [00:55:56] For for last years,.
Gil Cedillo [00:55:57] She hasn't even, hasn't even endorsed me.
Nury Martinez [00:56:00] Well, we're going to.
Gil Cedillo [00:56:02] She hasn't even endorsed me. [00:56:03]l'm gonna break her. [0.0s]

Context: in 2014, LA Council member Gil Cedillo cancelled a planned bike lane on this dangerous section of road. This is the 5th cyclist fatality there since 2014. The victim was run over from behind by a driver, the most common type of car-bike collision. Protected bike lanes largely prevent this

When we got to Little Tokyo the train driver said that our train was full and next train was a 5 minute wait away but people still tried piling in. Never seen it this crowded outside of special events

The thing about these AI chat bot cases is that if the human had been chatting with another human that offered them the same conversation, advice, assurances, etc. they’d be charged as an accomplice. So let’s do that.

Do it! Metrolink is honestly way underrated and could be so much better if it got as much attention and advocacy as LA Metro

Caltrans would never do this, but we really need to think about decommissioning half or all of the Arroyo Seco Parkway and having ArroyoFest more than once every 20 years would be a good start

Putting on my hobby historian hat- We may have never had 40% of trips by bike like Copenhagen but in 1909 bikes were 12% of traffic in some parts of Downtown LA. The region’s footprint and topography hasn’t changed (look at map of the train network from the era) but the infrastructure has changed.

And money spent making a street safer reduces the number of emergency calls because building or person got smashed into. Money spent on protected bike lanes reduces the amount of street space that needs resurfacing (unless there’s damage from tree roots that bike lane will never need to be repaved)

I’ve gotten a couple polls that seemed focused on city attorney but did also ask about mayoral preference. Also been asked about Senate District 26 race where there was question about who I support for mayor so there definitely are polls out there

Biking in hilly, east of downtown (no coastal breeze) parts of Los Angeles the biggest sweat deterrent has been switching to e-bike with basket. Beyond that I’m kinda out of ideas. I want to hear from someone who has affixed an umbrella to their bike as sun protection.

I would be if I didn’t see progress but places like NYC (feels like there’s new bike lanes every week) and SF (closed a highway to cars!) keep me optimistic broadly while local conditions continue to improve- lots of new bike lanes that didn’t exist 16 years ago when LA adopted its 2010 bike plan.

I feel like Taplin’s comment may have helped turn Bartlett’s vote. That or Bartlett was being “consensus” oriented and just voted yes on both options. Blackaby arguing 10k+ people parking on Hopkins a week will be affected by assuming each car has 2 people, each spot turns over 5x a day was “hmm”

I work on delivering bike lanes (got 5 public meetings and tabling activities next month for one of my projects). we get full spectrum of feelings on repurposing car lanes. I don’t see how focus-grouping conservative Twitter would make me more prepared. Have conversations in the real world.

Just leave Twitter. Once you do you will realize it’s not necessary. If needed, stay signed off for a month and determine if you feel like you’re missing anything- news, events, conversations… all these things can be found elsewhere without dip in quality.

Make DASH buses free first: fully city run (no excuses about needing the necessary votes), only costs 50 cents a ride or 35 cents if pay with TAP (annual operating budget of $3M if I recall correctly) and was free for 4 years during covid. DASH didn’t have same safety issues as Metro when made free.

Tragic. My heart goes out to her friends, family, and colleagues. The first incident of this type (transportation planner killed by car) that stuck with me was a local one, where an LA Metro transportation planner died crossing street in 2020. www.legacy.com/us/obituarie...

Yeah we need to make it just a little harder to run for governor, I’m used to seeing like a dozen names but it literally was like 60 people running 😆

Cargo Bike NELA @vmsev.bsky.social · 07/06/2026
Totally, I think it helps explain why Nithya’s gains have been much bigger than expected. In normal cycle she might chip away at Pratt’s lead at half the rate she has been doing it past two days.

Cargo Bike NELA @vmsev.bsky.social · 07/06/2026
I’m sure there’s a good academic paper but people who vote early have luxury of time (older, richer, and/or whiter) and later voters are younger, poorer, less white. And those demographics just vote differently 🤷‍♂️
020
Cargo Bike NELA @vmsev.bsky.social · 07/06/2026
In addition to strategic waiting on governor’s race this year, in general Left demographic tends to turn in their ballots late. That’s why most CA elections have “red mirage” where Right does well early but then things get flipped. It fuels the conspiracy “they are rigging votes to favor Left in CA”
